i have limited tools and am trying to get my slant run better. the best i have been able to get is about 10-11 inches @ 1000rpms on the vacuum gauge.

the setup is an .080 bore, heavilly ported head w/ oversized valves, 9.2:1 comp, .510lift 246 dur @ .050 and a 108 LSA. holley 600dp and clifford manifold w/ hooker super comps.

im running 67 primary jets and 72 on the secondaries. no vacuum leaks that i know of but i will smoke it when i get to work. i have the stock points dizzy with the petronix ignitor II setup(for now) @15* intial.

any ideas on tunning? i trying to buy a wideband and gauge but thats 300bucks...

Your carburetor is too big. Start by putting on a more appropriately-sized one and you'll be miles ahead before you even do the first round of tweaking.

Is the cam degreed in? (any advance in the cam?).

246@.050 is pretty hefty too, I would have shot for 10:1 static compression on a 225 stock rod engine the 70 degrees of overlap is bleeding down the compression nicely for a 9:1...

As Dan said your carb is too big the double pumper is not helping either,
it'd be closer if you had a Holley 600 with vaccuum secondaries and put the "black" spring in the spring pod...500 edelbrock or a 390 holley would be a bit more manageable...

What does your timing light say you have for advance with the vacc. adv plugged at 2000 rpm?

well the old timer who really made this build what it is told me to run this set up.

also when i had just got the motor running, intial start up and break in, it was really close! but now after 5K miles the motor is breaking in and trying new valve lashes my lesser knowledge of tunning is preventing me from making it happy again!

the cam is straight up. im gonna pull the head and deck it so get a 10.1 which is what i wanted.

as far as timing initial is 15* and total is 30*. i'll check again @ what rpm! i am working to get an msd box and put my 73 elect dizzy in.

Okeh, well, I guess you need to decide what you want. Do you want to feel good about the old timer who gave you bad advice on carburetor selection (and apparently on compression and cam)? Or do you want your car to run well for you? Doesn't look like "both" is on the menu.

well when funds are there i'll be decking the head to get up to 10:1. and considering he has a 12sec slant that is street driven i wouldn't say its bad advice. i mite daily drive mine but i never said anything about milage.

i never get into arguments with people on here or FABO because everybody has a different opinion and method. but for u to say he or anybody else is wrong i feel is wrong.

i realize a 600dp i big but can u help me by giving me methods of tuning. i really want to learn! i dont want to be offensive and sorry if it came off that way
thx ed

Edd, is a straight up guy and does do good work (I'm still trying to catch up to Mrs.J's Demon at the track, and actually I'm still waiting for my autographed CD with the award winning Deja Vu on it!)...Sounds more like you need to lash the valves again and see if that helps the idle and vacc. I'd still suggest a vacc. secondary car for street use (390 or 600 with appropriate mods).

At 10:1 the engine will be night and day... for 9.5:1 or so I would have recommended the erson .465 lift cam especially on the street, the .510 cam I think needs a lot of attention to get it right. I think going EI with a moderately quick advance will help the timing situation.

What rearend and gear ratio,do you have under your car? (Just curious
as the engine combo you have should see 190+hp at the crank when dialed in, but it's going to like it at high rpm...so no 2.76/2.94 gears...)

well i have a tranny build (904 with manual reverse VB, 3K flash converter) and 8.75 with 3.91's / sure grip in the works. finishing assembly on the 8.75 shortly.

as far as HP i did a 3/4 pull on the chassis dyno and put down 178hp and 245 ft tq @ 5K. this was with a stock drive train with over 300K miles! oh and the car is a 68 dart.[/img]
