first off i would like to thank slant 6 forum for a great site. it has helped me doing some research and i am about to purchase a 74 duster. pics to follow once i pick it up. it has a 225 sl6 engine. car seems pretty clean. needs some cosmetic work and is mechanicly sound. however; i would like some rattle when i start her up. i have read about carbs, heads, etc. My question to my fellow slant 6ers is what would be my best options. i am currently unemployed so money is coming in slowly. i will be purchasing pcs a bit at a time and me and a friend will be most/all the installations. the engine has 85,1xx original miles on it. new tires, starter, fuel pump, hoses, ign coil, distributor and the top half of the engine has been redone. i will be driving this around town. i would like the rumble to show off against my neighbors mustang. any help is greatly appreciated.

Easy to pick up used parts...just watch for them on the boards, CL, Ebag etc. You can really do alot of improvement to the slant. A is the case with a lot of things it will require some money and the engine Head(at a minimum) to come out. Larger valves and milling the head REALLY wake a slant up. As for bolt on or low buck stuff Recurve the distributor, Thoughtfully getting rid of some of the smog stuff May help (if you dont have to pass emissions where you are at).
My thoughts are the EGR system....and the hockey puck (senior moment and cant think of the name for it).

thank you. this is my first car that i will be beefing up. i know nothing about engines so i have been reading up on here and talking to a few friends. i would like to do as much as possible at home. but besides that. what is the first thing i should do?

If the emissions gear is working correctly, it doesn't cost anything in performance.
Finding a good vacuum amplifier, the device mounted above the valve cover with all the vacuum lines going to it, is getting difficult.

Your best bang per buck is to increase compression, and install a higher stall converter. There were "High Stall" OEM converters that stall a bit above the standard converters.
Rear gears will make a big difference too.

After that, get yourself a bigger head pipe, 2-1/4", and run 2-1/4 back to the muffler. From the muffler back you can run the OEM tailpipe.

From there, look into finding a two barrel intake and carb off an Aspen or Volare. Don't forget the kickdown linkage!

So in order: CC the head, measure how far down the hole your pistons are, and get your compression up into the 9:1 or slightly higher range. Then get your rear gear ratio numerically higher, and see if you can score a higher stall converter. Lot's of folks like 3.23 gears. If your mainly in town, 3.55's will really wake things up.
Even with the 1bbl it will be a different car.

Sweet car. Welcome on the board! The first thing you'll want to do is get the three books in this thread and start readin'! By doing this first you will have a solid understanding of how the various parts of the car work (and work together) and how to remove, disassemble, repair or modify, install, and adjust them. By getting a handle on this knowledge first, the whole project will be far more successful and fun, and far less costly and frustrating. Don't make the mistake I did, of being so excited to be working on my first car and so full of big dreams for it that I wound up taking it apart without knowing how to do so properly or how to put it back together, and that car never ran or drove again. As you learn, your goals for the car will become more specific and achievable. I would say, though, that wanting to show off against somebody else's car is not a good reason to spend a single dollar or minute or thought. Build your car for you.

do a complete tuneup including vavles,recruve dist., filters, turn aircleaner lidover,2 1/4 pipe back to short glass pack...llast two are just to annoy everyoneelse lol
