My nephew has a 70 dodge charger. He had the gauges reconditioned and after I reinstalled the cluster (that sucked, big time) the needles just float around. Could it be a bad dash voltage regulator? I did run a fresh ground from the dash cluster to a good ground.
In a (probably) related story, the car just doesn't charge at anything like idle. The alternator has been rebuilt, and the voltage regulator has been replaced. Any guesses? I am ready to give up.

Check the dash ground and feed to the voltage limiter carefully. You can put a test light on the temp sender connection - it ought to come on at full +12V, then start blinking on and off ~ 2Hz-ish (not entirely regular is normal). If you see much less than +12V when it's on, you've got a poor connection on the hot side.

If the problem gets worse with dash lights on bright, it is definitely a ground problem.

KBB, thanks a lot. I will check that as soon as I can get over there...
