How does this sound?:

initial adv = 11*
13R gov = 26*
vac pot 6.5 = 13*

total = 50*

If this is a good combo, I will have the curve done on a machine. I have numerous spring combos to choose from. (half dozen dist)

I also have an 11r and 11.5r govs.

At what rpm does the curve start to move?

When do you reach maximum advance?

How much vacuum before vacuum advance starts?

How much vacuum at max vacuum advance?

Straight linear curve, or 2 step?


All the above depend on what you've done (or not done) to the engine...........

p.s. After changing out my intake I discovered that the head is ported and polished. Not sure what else the engine has done. I just put a 2bbl carb and intake on it. Trani is a pb auto.

37° total mechanical is too much. If you have a stock cam a little less initial timing (around 5-8°) is fine. Total mechanical timing should be about 30-32°. How fast the advance comes in will depend upon the engine's state of tune along with vehicle weight and gearing. Lighter cars with numerically high gears can bring in the timing rather quickly.

What is your rear end ratio?????
What are your cam specs???
What rpms do you cruise at on the freeway?

I tune them to produce the most torque at low rpms and for cruise on a street car.

With 10 degrees initial I would limit the mechanical to 20 degrees and let the can do the rest....for 50 degrees.

Try to tune the can so it comes on late, not too early...

As far as I know it's a stock cam. Not sure of my ratio and I cruise at around 3k at 65ish.
Out of my list of parts what would be the best combo to take and have a curve made.

I am tuning by vacuum also because my tab does not exist. Advance dist till miss and back off 1/2hg for about 20hg at idle. Idle/air set per Weber 32/36 specs (holley 5200 on 2bbl intake).

Wow.......doing it by ear and vacuum would put you about 16 to 20 degrees inititial before it misses.....

That would put you way over timed to where the engine would feel preety flat. It could start running a little on the hot side...

You need to JB Weld on a tab.......ASAP!

Ok so 13L gov is too much for freeway accel(slight ping). Back to 11.5R I guess. Gawd I want to put my cam in sooo bad! Clifford headers wont fit with current ac pump bracket either! :evil:

Changing the governor isn't going to solve your problem. Use a stiffer secondary spring. A long looped MOPAR spring that is really stiff will stop the mechanical at 20 degrees. That is what I am running.....per Doc's recommendation. It works very well. :)

I know it would be a pain in the arse but could you tell me the length and # winds on that spring? :D I have a handful of them and need to narrow it down. Or should I just have the curve set by a shop($10). Just not sure of what info they need to do it...

Sure, if you refer to Doc's picture of the black film container with the springs dumped out you will see two versions. A 6 wind with a short loop and a 8 wind long loop. Those 8 wind long loop I have came from HP 340's, HP 440's and one 400. I am using the 8 wind long loop with the spring post rotated all the way in. It is black and very heavy gauge wire. It stops my 15R governor right at 20 degrees at 2500 rpm and the hard stop is about 3000 rpm at 23 degrees mechanical. I never drive much past 2800 rpm on the freeway. Mostly right at 2500 rpm + or - 500 rpm. The primary spring is a medium gauge red one with the spring post rotated all the way out.

I wouldn't have a shop mess with it. Do it your self.
