I've decided it's time to rebuild my tried and true four speed slant six van my dad bought new. I have a couple questions. I recently pulled an exhaust manifold and 2bbl intake from the junk yard, my van has the old holley 1945 bbl now I want to maybe add a lil more go since I use this van for mobile auto repair, what carb will fit the 2bbl intake? Also wanted to maybe ore it out .030 and put in a mild cam, something to give it just a lil more go without going too wild. Any suggestions? Also am swapping from a "lean burn" type distributor to a vacuum advance unit. Does this need full vacuum at idle or is it ported vacuum? It also has an AIR pump which I am going to remove since it is noisy, it has add on A/C so the AIR pump also worked as the tensioner for the a/c belt, any suggestions there? Any other tips I should be aware of when doing this rebuild? Any advice would be great

2 BBL options are Holley 2280 and Carter BBD. Erson RV-10 or 15 or even a 270 are good easy cams.
Air pump is ok to remove as long as the cat(s) are gone and removed. Charrlie S sells an EXCELLENT a/c conversion that uses modern high eff Sanden comp. and is quality built.

thats the crazy part, the A/C has a sanden compressor, I believer when dad bought this van it was a dealer add on A/C out of the showroom I didn't have a/c. Had another question regarding the ignition, if I change to the vacuum advance distrib do I need to do the whole GM HEI conversion I see here or can I just get a pre lean burn chrysler ign module?? I really don't want to make anything I don't have to...

Every 80s era mopar I have seen that had A/C used the Sanden compressor. The older V-style compressors won't fit in a van anyway- they hit the firewall. The Sanden compressor is a must for A/C in a slant six powered van.

Yes you can 'just do' a MoPar ign change over without doing the GM type HEI although the HEI sure seems to be the way to go(I haven't done my van yet but did a leanburn conversion). The dist will need ported vaccum and you'll also need to throw the leanburn comp in the recycle bin.So dist, ballast, ecu plus wire loom piece for a Chy ign conversion. What year is your van? I'd like to see how the add on aircond.unit is plumbed into your dash, any chance you could post or PM me a pic? Thanks and good luck :)

There are folks here that will have parts #s an such, hopefully they'll chime in.I didn't have this forum to guide me through mine,I purchased a Summit elec ign conversion for a v8 and used everything except the dist(it went in my 360).It had everything you'll need including detailed instructions(with pic)and while it's more then likely imported junk it got me converted to MoPar style with addition of a slant dist. :)

For a van? I say Holley 2280. Flows 250 CFM instead of the 280 the BBD is rated at. Gives you a bit better gas mileage without much performance sacrifice. The thing is, with a van you really want to do all you can to maximize low RPM torque. You won't ever turn higher than 4000 RPM, and probably no higher than 3000.
