If the engine has a sender for a gauge it might do keep the light on unless he lost oil pressure. Have you made sure you have the right sender?

Read back up the thread, nuttyprof; he's physically/visually verified no oil coming from the pump. The sender is not a relevant question yet -- first he has to find and fix the problem preventing oil pressure.

for what it's worth, I had a 273 that had good pressure when you started it but it lost all pressure within a couple of minutes.found problem was block oil screen on pickup and oil filter was plugged,I figure you more than likely changed the oil and filter, but the oiling system on a car works as a hyd. pressure system which needs to be pressurized to pick up the oil to circulate around the motor, may need to change the screen and possibly flush the block to make sure the blockage is not anywhere else. hope this might help

If the pump will not "prime" and pull oil up the pickup, there would only be a few causes.

1) A bad oil pump. (worn-out, rotor or gear spinning on the drive shaft, stuck relief valve etc.)

2) A clogged pick-up.

3) Air entering the pick-up side. (cracked or loose threads, bad gasket at the pump pocket, missing or incorrect pick-up...)
