73 225 with a holley 1945 sitting on top. First thing i noticed today was black smoke coming out the tail pipe. Found this As stated the oil smells of gas. Yet the oil level is correct. so i'm not sure if its the fuel pump. although, I'm fairly certain that whatever this is is recent. I changed the oil about a week and a half ago, and there was no gasoline smell. i know the choke is operating, but i cant tell if its operating correctly because i really don't know what a proper operating choke looks like. the engine is in dire need of a rebuild. but I just cant afford it. This may be the end of the line for this slant

One way or another, this engine is running way too rich (black smoke).
Sounds like either the carburetor is kaput or the choke is not opening properly.

That makes sense. The oil you smelled in the gas was due to blowby in the cylinders. Do you have the proper PCV valve and a breather to the air cleaner?

yes i do. the pcv valve is clean. i pulled it out and it rattles when i shake it. don't know that state of the breather. im not sure how that comes off. i believe it is just yanked off? I am loathe to go in and just start pulling on things till i have a vague sense of what im doing.

If yours is really rattling, the spring inside may be junk. Is it a plastic one or a metal one? How new is it? To test, start the engine, go to the PCV valve, pull the hose off, and put your finger over it, if the engine RPMs rise by very much, the PCV should probably be replaced. If the RPMs don't change, or change very little, then it should be fine.

Having an improper PCV valve will also get you the same result as a bad one will. You have to be careful at part stores, aftermarket manufacturers often make them to fit a variety of vehicles, meaning that it may not be proper for any of the ones it is "designed" to work with.

The breather simply pulls out of the grommet in the valve cover. If you would like to see if you have excessive blowby, a cylinder leakdown test is the only method to use to get solid numbers. If you get enough smoke out of the breather that you can easily see it, then your rings are tired, but you knew that already I see, since you mention it is in need of a rebuild.

i know i have excessive blow by. the little bit of oil in the air cleaner housing is evidence of that. the up shot is the blow by doesn't smell of gas. I guess that's an upshot.

Wrong, you're guessing again. Shaking a PCV valve to make sure it rattles is a valid test. Rattle = not clogged.

No. If the RPMs drop, you know the PCV tract is not completely clogged. This test does not tell you if the valve itself is good. If the RPMs rise at all, the idle mixture is adjusted too lean.

Not really, no. The problem with off-brand PCV valves is sloppy tolerances, not excessive consolidation. And it's not "aftermarket manufacturers". A PCV valve in a Purolator, AC-Delco, Standard, Kem, or Echlin box (amongst some others) is just fine. Thor, you're making stuff up again. Y'remember that chat you and I had in PM awhile back about what to do when you don't know the answer? Remember that? Please stop and think now. Karasik87 asked legitimate questions and deserves not to be misled by guesses and randomness dressed up as authoritative assistance.

Is there a functioning PCV valve that doesn't make a racket from all the constant rattling?

My new NAPA Echlin PCV can be continuously heard from the driver's seat.

Anyone have a relatively new functioning PCV that's quiet most of the time?

Yep. A correct PCV valve made well will not rattle. Try an ACDelco CV761C, a Standard V165, or a Chrysler 5175 351AA.
