my new ole 65 Belvedere went out on its first 20 mile ride in 15 yrs. All was well until a strong smell of fuel, followed by bucking and stalling.

Heres the carb. Nubmer on body: 6-1697

It was leaking, seemingly everywhere.

Are there replacements available? who has rebuild kits? thanks.

Take the metal fuel line off the carb and unscrew the needle and seat. Make sure you don't have junk holding the needle off the seat. If you don't it's likely the float is bad.

Not a carb number, it's a casting number. Looks like a generic "reman" unit. Not the worst-looking one I've ever seen, but not super great, either. The carb number would have been on an aluminum tag secured to one of the two front bowl screws. The best mass-market kits are made by Walker. The best complete kits with new jets, step-up rods, etc. come from www.thecarburetorshop.com (you can use carb number 3678s if you order one of those). Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. If you are just trying to patch together a carb with warped body castings without spending major bucks, buy two Walker kits and double-up on gaskets.
