OK, well the ongoing wiring/rewiring of my truck has uncovered some problems. I have a ammeter that has not worked the whole time i've owned the truck. I have found that the shunt is gone. I have hit up all the auto parts stores, alternator shops, and chrysler dealers and the typical response is "whats a shunt?". I think it has a 60 amp alternator (thats what the haynes book said). Does anyone know what the ohm rating is on the shunt? I know it cant be much.

thanks for any help

If the truck runs the shunt has probably already been bypassed. I would make sure that is the case and also make certain the alternator power does not have to go through the bulkhead connector to reach the battery. I would then add a volt meter to monitor the charging system. If you really want a shunt that works correctly with the existing dash gauge you'll have to dig one out of a wrecking yard.

The shunt-type ammeters on these trucks are pathetically weak. They work very poorly when they work, and they fail with alacrity. Best to pretend they don't exist. They went to voltmeter instead for '90. I replaced the ammeter in my '89 twice with new, each of which lasted about three months, before I finally just left it for dead.

I solved the problem, I cut the wires to the ammeter and ran 32ga? (not sure on size its from a phone cord) one wire strait to the battery the another to the spare battery terminal on the starter solenoid. My wiring is not stock i have a 8ga wire from the battery to a strip of brass with many hot wires running from it including the starter solenoid and alternator wire. I think that with this set up I could run a 90A or 120A alternator without trouble, because the 8ga wire is the shunt. Also I think that the phone wire would fail before the gauge, its a lot smaller.

I hope this helps someone.
