When Julie called wildcat and talked to Matt we pointed her to the forum.
I'm very glad joshie showed up and helped her out, Joshie was also the frist Slantsix.org guy I met also. I dropped by and took a look @ the valiant on saturday and most of what it needs we got and since it's just odds and ends it shouldn't be to bad. plus i'm scrapping 1/2 of the a bodys anyways (when i do it will be a u pull it situation with 75 to 80% off normal prices per ed)

No, it doesn't damage the engine, but putting in a new distributor gear if yours fails will be more of a pain than usual because the timing marks are off.

i've got the delectable smell of old carburettor infusing my bedroom; believe it or not, i really like it. ;) i love my car, and all of this is worth it. sure i could have bought another $1,200 subaru and put $1,500 into it...but life is too short to drive vehicles you have no love or respect for.

edit to add: guess what! i just landed a REAL sewing job. not much work at the moment, but, it's a start!!! local business, vintage clothing.

took her out for the first run since josh worked his magic....wait for it....NO STALLS! not one! if you don't count running out of gas. had to buy a 5 gal. gas can and five gal. o' gas, but that was that and off we went!!!

idles nice and smooth.

i am one very. very. very. happy woman.

and it's great to know: thanks to all the great help, i know what is making what sounds, what they mean, and what i need to do to fix.

josh, thank you...again. i can't say it enough. what you did was easily one of the nicest things anyone has done for me. i am humbled.

In my experience as well as yours, Josh is the man with the plan, and the ability to make it happen.

You will find that alot of us on the board here that live anywhere near another member have met, and there are quite a few of us here in the Pacific NW. As a result, help is never far away.

i don't have a camera! i need to get my room mate to take pics with her phone one of these days when she's home, before she moves.

josh knows what he is doing, even to a novice like me, i have enough bystander experience to know how good he is...i'm nervous to trust my car to someone else.

i have started hearing not just, cars, but, individual engines...the language of the road, lol! also hearing a lot more of the steering & motor mount clunkage....or was it the alternator? i'm babying her big time and figuring out at what radius clunks happen, so i can avoid them. it feels GREAT to not be stalling out.

lots of tick tick from the exhaust manifold leak though (someone thought it would be smart to weld in the bolt at the front that broke off, it's a pretty bad leak). glad i know what it is or i'd be stressing over it way more.

I'm working on a parts pile for you, so far I have a gas tank w/ sending unit
Exhaust manifold and motor mounts that are not shot. I should have more time this weekend to find parts and help

thanks, neil! keep an eye peeled for that steering thing. josh says there is more than likely a creative disaster in my turn signal wiring that will require removing all of it anyways to fix, so i figure might as well get that done at the same time. i'm pretty sure the drain has stopped, but i'm disconnecting battery anyways cause who KNOWS what goes on with janky wires when people sleep. minnehunis, leprechauns, and unicorns, oh my!

unfortunately, because some dingbat welded that bolt in (and there's a major leak there) to the exhaust manifold, replacing the entire thing is probably going to be a lot easier than trying to get the two busted bolts out, cost of labor is probably more for that than the cost of replacing the whole thing. but what do i know.

this is my amended need list, as of my last phone convo with josh:

*exhaust manifold leak
*brakes/master cylinder (have MC, need three sets of brakes)
*steering coupler
*shorter alternator belt
*wiring (no signal, headlights, or horn)/dimmer switch/turn signal switch
*battery cables, battery (low on list, but important)
*i need to re-do that valve cover gasket job. already totally screwed up. going to call that guy and let him know.
* gas tank/sending unit (thanks for working out a trade with me, neil! big time thanks!)
*shocks
*motor mount
*valve fix or new valve head
*suspension. not even going there yet, but, it's lurking in the back of my mind all the time.
*interior. my son loves the car, but he's a little snob & thinks getting the interior fixed should be the first thing i do. oh and the stereo, haha!

i am happy to say that i can now visualize everything under the hood, and have an understanding of how important it is, what it does, and what tools i need to do certain jobs myself. i will probably never be able to switch out plugs in five minutes flat like josh can, but, i can give it a go!

hey i got a $1,300 settlement for a wing ding on my front end and i am now looking to buy all parts i need to get her in top shape at the best price i can find.

that steering coupler is top of the list, then brakes shoes (need three, not four, have the master cylinder, thanks josh!). doing the steering will mean also repairing the wiring, lord knows what i need but i think josh said something about turn signal fluid. haha.

can anyone point me to some sources for these things? they are the things i probably won't be able to get at the pull at wildcat on the second of may, since brakes need to be new and the steering coupler could be dicey to find in better shape than what i have.

i need to find a good affordable source, i'll be buying all the parts i need and then budgeting in mechanical work as able.

What specifically are you referring to when you say you need three brake shoes not four?

There are two shoes in each drum. All the shoes must match to work right. That would be the front end shoes need to match each other, and the rear axle must match on the rear brakes. It's not quite as critical to match the front brakes to the rear, but it's a very good idea.

Don't mix and match shoes, and don't mix and match tires. Your car will handle better and be a lot safer! :D
