i'm rebuilding my 83 slant and am thoroughly confused on how the rear main seal cap goes on and how to correctly seal the oil pan. Anyone provide some good pics??

it that cap the way you should see it from the back of the engine???are the bolts exposed or do they face the other way?

It says in the article that the main seal retainer bolts are exposed to the outside.

well I wish I had a factory manual. and I gotta be honest although this ol van has been a part of my life since I was 2 I gotta confess I have been a GM guy for the most part so this is really my first slant rebuild....

Yup, you definitely want one. They're very cheap especially compared to the cost of redoing stuff later 'cause you didn't have proper specs and images the first time around. See this thread.
