I started my truck today voltmeter was fine, then I went to the engine compartment to check the auto choke. I returned to the drivers seat to check engine temp and the voltmeter is dead. Upon investigation there is 14.4 volts steady (running) on the + side and 0 volts on the - side. Its a sunpro gauge that is 2 years old.

Has anyone had a similar issue with there voltmeter?

they all die at some point........I'd recommend a stewart warner guage never had one burn out ...........volt meters need to be high quality in my opinion.........you can get by on others guages but voltmeters are workin hard all the time..........everything electrical on your car passes through your voltmeter. Even dead shorts.

Voltmeters do not carry amperage - they simply measure voltage - if it has failed prematurely it was either of poor quality or just bad luck that it failed.

Ammeters on the other hand will carry a load through them and can fail if the load is higher than the rating of the meter - initial indication of too much load on an analogue ammeter would be the needle spiked fully to the right and off scale although you may not catch it since it will happen rather quickly and ruin the meter - of course you may notice smoke - heh.

I'm sure there are board members that can suggest more reliable voltmeters if yours is of questionable quality :)

Well funny thing it worked today :? but, I think that I will replace it anyway. I'm thinking of getting a autometer brand voltmeter.
