My kid parked his Scamp in my driveway: Dad, can you fix it? It won't go into reverse. I took the trans pan off, reverse band adjustment thing'y is hanging loose. I'm not an internal trans guy- just adjust and remove & replace experience. Is replacing that reverse band something I could do with the trans on the work bench, by removing the tail shaft housing and tail shaft? I looked at the 1975 factory service manual, and it looked like it might be do-able without completly disassembling the trans? (You guru's are amazzzzing! ) :?

It is a remove transmission job. :(
You will have to remove front pump, both front drum and rear clutch pack to be able to get the band replaced. It's not hard if you have been into the transmission, if not best have someone with knowledge do the repair. :( :(

While you got the pan off, shine a light up in there to be sure the band realy is broken.Maybe you'll get lucky, and it just got so far out of adjustment, that the band strut fell out. Look for a 1x1 1/8 piece of metal, and maybe you can put it back in place with a bent nose pliers. The narrow sides of the strut contact the lever, and the band.

Thanks guys- I took the pan off to drain the fluid, and found the "strut' laying in the pan. But I closed the pan before reading your comments, so at a later date I'll take a look to see if the band is broken fer-sure or not. We put a spare trans into the car so he can drive it to his summer job. I had recently adjusted the bands on it by the shop manual, as I've done on all our other 904's, and it operated very nicely, so I don't think the adjustment was an issue. Is it possible to pop that link out without breaking anything- just by mis-treating reverse? I guess I'll find out when I get around to opening it again. :)
