hi all, i recently found a holly 4165 stashed in my grandfathers shed. i was wondering if this carb would work reasonably well in replacing the bbd on the 318 in my truck. i have a factory cast iron spreadbore small block 4bbl manifold, and was previously going to use a thermoquad, but i fear it may have to many emmisions hookups and cause me headache after headache. any thoughts on using the holly over the thermoquad

This would depend heavily on a few factors:

1) Check the numbers on the air horn and make sure you have a 625-650 cfm 4165/4175 Holley...that's a better start than the bigger versions.

2) You will need a kickdown linkage to make it work if an automatic.

3) To win back mileage, you will need to dial the jets in, especially in the primaries, do some test driving to see if the PV is correct. Check the secondary vacc. spring and reset it to Brown or Black. Do a bit of recurving on the distributor to make it all jive.

Other than that, it should work. I've run them on big blocks, but have not tryed one on a small block , but a few readjustments and it should be ok.
If the carb has been sitting a while, rebuilding would be a good thing.

or this? i have the kickdown bracket off a 4bbl equiped ramcharger, there is a difference in the angles there i found out and managed to track one down.

edit: brought it home today, blasted off the dirt with carb cleaner, turns out to be a holley 6210. is it still a viable alternative to a thermoquad on on pretty much stock 318?

I had both a Holley and a thermoquad on my 70 Dart with a 360. The thermoquad turned out to be the more stable of the two, and in the end, provided better power.

But, it took me two complete carbs to make one good one. I cannot remember the spotting features for which one to get, but I think it is the one with the bowel vent coming up into the air horn. With thermoquads, the big trouble was warpage of the plastic body. Make sure yours is straight if you decide to go that route. They can develop vacuum leaks, I think, if they are warped.
