Charlie - I think you got the PNs mixed up. 4120243 is the 436 cam.

Lou
You are correct. I did an edit on my post. It is correct now. It doesn't look like the numbers on the end of the cam, identify it. The number on my 528 cam is different then on your 528 cam.

MJ - What carburetion are you going to use? That cam is a mild/medium cam in my book. Keep in mind that you can run 87 octane up to about 9.5:1 comp with that cam and the right timing curve. 340 valve springs (drop in replacements) would work fine with that cam, and shouldn't cost $100. You'd want 2400 or more stall to best use that cam, BUT if you advance 2-4 deg, it should work reasonably OK with a stock stall.

My two cents...

Lou
Lou I'll talk to you after the weekend, we can figure something out. The valve springs that they were recommending are the 1.5" MP 4120249 springs so I'd have to have the seats cut wider, etc. But really my goal with the engine was to have low end torque, and I think this won't work well for that.

Carb: 2x1 offy.

MJ

The 268 cam should work well with 2X1 offy. You definitely do NOT need special springs that need head cutting. Ask any machine shop (or supplier like mancini racing or summit racing) for stock replacement 340 mopar springs and those will work just fine with that cam and even a little bigger.

You will give up a little low end torque with that cam, but believe me, a 2500 stall converter and that cam will make the car a lot more fun to drive. Will you have any head porting done?

Seems like this cam will save you $150 for a new one, which gives that money to spend on a converter.

If it were mine, I'd do 0.080" off the head, some bowl porting before the valve job, and get a 78 Aspen distributor to convert to elec ign and have a better advance curve. You can still run on 87 octane. Should really wake it up - low 16 sec 1/4 at most, 15s very possible. Definitely degree any cam that goes in.

Lou

Hi Lou,

I am having head porting done, I just got the head tanked and was taking it over soon to get that done. I'm running up against a deadline of June 10th, and Cox Bros have a lot of non-slant work right now, so we'll be pushing it to get this done. I may end up with a half-done head on my way to CA ;-)

My concern is that I recall reading someplace and getting an email that told me that there were real problems finding converters for the early transmissions (mine is a 62 pushbutton) due to spline size or something. I can't recall if that was the same problem when going between <67 and 67> engines. The one article I saw on the subject said i'd have to have a custom converter made to the tune of $300 or so. Am I getting correct info? Can you point me towards something that would fit my application?

I also never really planned on putting this car to the track, but to make it fun to drive around town. I do secretly hold some autocross desires, but you didn't see that in print. Going to the track and spending money there would guarantee a divorce for me ;-) Which makes me think that a slightly milder cam, like a comp cams 252s or the MP244 would let me get more low-end torque since WOT is not really something I'll be experiencing much.

So here was my plan:

1--cc the combustion chamber, and then depending on those readings take about .070 off the head.
2--port out the bowls and clean everything up
3--hottank the valves and rocker arm shaft and reassemble.
4--hope for big smiles ;-)
5--will degree the cam

I have already converted to electronic ignition via a later model elect dist and GM HEI with Blaster2 coil.

I figure if my love of the slant changes in the next two years, its not the end of the world to put a new cam and lifters in, do the converter and have more fun learning in the process. My concern is I get too much race into the car and basically end up driving my son around in his baby seat more than anything else. He'd enjoy the ride, but probably not the best setup for me at the moment.

You guys are the best, thanks for all the advice. And thanks for snivelling at the monitor but not making fun of me for wanting a teensy weensy cam ;-) hehehe

Happy monday!

MJ

Sounds like very realistic goals and a good trajectory. Yep, you can always do more upgrades later. MP 244 or Comp 252 should suit you very well then.

The converter for a 62 should be the same as those up to 66. You would need the small hub snout and small splines. If you can't find someone to build one with small splines (hub is easy), then several places (Continental Converter in Inglewood, CA) can modify and beef up your stocker for extra stall. Down the road a ways...

Lou, Let me know if you still have this cam and are willing to let it go. If not can you let me know where to purchase.

I don't have any cams I want to sell right now. I have ordered some regrinds from Oregoncams.com recently and they look good but I haven't used yet. Erson will also regrind your cam for a reasonable price, I'm told.
