I don't see a reason to ever use a new cam, especially given all the problems and the fact that Tilley always uses regrinds. Seems that all the blanks are junk since the mid 90s.

Lifted engine pulled pump, gear is bad, sharp and dished. Will pull motor later this week to inspect cam gear. This is a new comp cam that I had them nitrate.I have put 50 passes on this engine.Pulled pump out of old engine that had 150 passes on it and the gear looked perfect running on a Erson cam.Going to have both tested along with a old stock gear for hardness. Also want to figure out where the gear should be on the shaft, both my re worked pumps the gear is against the houseing, .001 feeler gauge wont go beetween.Stock old one has about a 32nd gap between gear and houseing. Also one of the blueprinted pumps had a key way,the one that failed didnt.I will figure this out or go external.$$$$ OUCH.Guzzi Mark

Mark..........Please keep us informed I've had 3 failures since 1999 $$$$$$$$.
I'm paranoid. I'm building a streetable supercharged 225 w/ the best parts I can find with every modification I know to prevent another failure,I'll be running one of docs pumps and an erson. I'm tired of building shortblocks only to have them destroyed by these failures. #$%@^&.......I could have a dry sump system by now ............ Thanks for the updates. I might just go external anyway. Have to save for a while but it would give one piece of mind anyway.
regards
max

Hey Guys I couldnt resist commenting on this subject. After wiping out three cams and distributor gears back to back I went to an single stage external oil pump 10 years ago and have been racing with it ever since.
Its the best way to go in my opinion. In my experience 6000 to 6500 rpms is too much torque on the gears especially if you run the high volume pump. With the ext. pump hook it up and forget it. Idle at 40 psi and build to 100 psi under acceleration. Having peace of mind not having to worry about when it is going to go out again means a lot.
Thanks
Ron Hamby

Ron,

Thanks for chiming in. Also nice to see someone use the "peace of mind" phrase properly (including spelling).

See you soon at the track,

Lou

I know I will plumb my pan for a external pump while I have it off.Due to money right now I might have to go with anouther hardened gear that I will have done. Will be calling Comp tommorrow to ask if the nitrateing could cause a problem with a stock hardened steel gear.Decideing factor will bee the cond of the gear on the cam and what the hard ness of the failded gear comes back after I have it tested against the perfect used gear I have.Stay tuned.Guzzi Mark

Going external.Wont chance the gear driven pump again.Think running 300 horsepower,,62 lbs of oil pressure and shifting at 6200 rpm is just too much for the stock style set up.My other engine,200hp.55lbs of oil pressure, shifting at 5500 rpm doest have any signs of gear problems.Think the new motor has crossed the threshold.I have allready cut up a stock aluminum oil pump houseing to put in a bung for the oil feed. Will be going from the back of pan to the pump, pump to oil filter gutted pump houseing.Filter will stay in the stock location.Less hoses and plumbing this way.Guzzi Mark

FWIW, I have had one failure with a Mopar .528 cam.

I replaced it with a Comp cam and had no wear whatsoever when I took it out after 2 seasons.

I put a used Clifford in that I got from Mike and have not had any issues, and used the same pump/gear that was run on the Comp cam.

I put the Comp in a buddy's motor with a new H/V MP pump and it killed a gear within 300 miles on the street.

Did find that the failed gear was right up against the houseing,no clearence and causeing drag.Pulled gear back a little,,, Pulled off too easy in my opinion,,,and the pump spun alot more freely.Pulled it off completly and could see where it was rubbing. If I were ever to use a stock pump again gear would get green loctite with a flat thrust washer and at least a couple tho clearence between gear and houseing.Think that would have saved this one.Mark

How much oil pressure were you running and what type/brand of oil?
