I've managed to get through 25+ years of old car ownership and many old cars without ever having owned one with full wheel covers...until now....with my Valiant.

I've had several 50's and 60's era cars, but they've all had the little dog dish caps.

So with this Valiant, I can't seem to get the wheel covers to stop making noise. At around 20 or 30mph, it's a click, click, click, then at higher speeds it's....well...a much faster version of that.

I've tried removing them and cleaning all the mating surfaces, but it seems to me that the only REAL solution is to get rid of them and switch to dog dishes.

Anyone have some wisdom/experience on this topic?

Check the fit. Depending on the design, you might be able to tweak the retaining "grippers" enough to hold them in place.

Have you taken the hub caps off , and then drive it to make sure its your Hub caps? Could possibly be something else going on there.

i had the same problem on my valiant with hub caps. some just dont fit no matter what you do. it even had me thinking i had a squeaky wheel bearing at one point if you can manage to get the part that holds onto them to hold like slantvaliant says that might work. it might just be easier to find others and/or dog dishes.

The bigger problem is when the wheel cover rotates and folds under / shears-off the valve stem.

On one of my "all factory" car, that still has it's nice, original wheel covers... I cleaned the rim's edge and then glued the wheel covers down using super weatherstrip adhesive.
This works but it's a hassel to set-up, let dry and re-do every time you pull-off a wheel cover.

I have found on noisy wheel covers is to use the handyman's secret weapon (duct tape) a couple of wraps around the gripping surface of the cover and it will quiet them down. I have done this on many covers plastic and metal and has worked very well. You have to replace the tape every couple of years.

Thanks for the replies....my dad advised me to take the covers off and bend out the tabs a bit (slantvaliant gave the same advice).

He said they get bent in over time, and aren't holding the cover on as good as they once did.

I'll try that and report back.

I've been driving the snot out of the valiant and haven't had time to mess with such a minor issue, but I'll tackle it this weekend.

Pot holes will fix the problem. Just hit a few good big ones at 60 mph, and that annoying clicking will cease…

Oh, I see you’re form the Lone State, land of the endless smooth road. I guess you are going to have to move to New England; one Spring’s worth of driving pot holes & frost heaves will fix things up, real nice, including any weak exhaust parts as well… LOL
