I was having problems with a low speed bouncing speedo cable and after doing a thorough re-lube and still no fix I went in for a replacement. My cable measured 62inches and the new is 80. Since i had the old one out of the car i put the new one in. Now the speed is reading 15 miles an hour faster than actual. And the bounce is maybe worse. Does the longer cable affect the speed? And does the bounce probably point to rebuild on the gauge? I can only seem to find 80 inch cable's out there. Does anyone know where to find a shorter one? This one came from Rockauto.

Thanks in advance.
Travis

TGR23,

Here is a 62 inch factory cable that should fit your 69 Valiant, I’m sure it is a lot more than Rock’s cable. Perhaps Year One carries a 62 incher, as well as other venders.

Some venders stock only one length cable, and describe it as longer to eliminate a sharp bend as it turns up and into the fire wall to promote longevity… Whatever… Length should have no effect on speedometer indicated speed.

I see from an earlier post that you have 14 inch tires. These may or may not be the original size tire that came with the car, and your transmission also may or may not be the original unit, and same with your rear axel gear. What I’m getting at is, perhaps you should check the speedometer cable drive gear located in the transmission to see if it has the correct number of teeth for the rear end gear ratio & tire size that is currently installed in your car. Method of rear-end gear ratio calculation here.

Here is an easy chart to use, however less expensive gears can be found on the net than what these people sell them for. There also may be a chart in your FSM in the “Transmissionâ€￾ section.

The other possible problem you already brought up, speedometer head is warn out. You can find venders that both fix these parts, and sell parts to one for a DIY fix, or perhaps you can locate a good used unit from a place such as this one on the west coast. Your speedometer was used for several years in several of Chrysler’s models, and should be easy to find a nice one.

That speedo cable is exactly what I had. I just ordered one. I wasn't happy with the big loop the cheap replacement was making.

I'll check the spedo gear. I was fine with a 5 mph difference but 15 is taxing my brain. Ironically for the first time in my life I'm happy to be the slowest on the road and so I'm not worried about going to fast. And certainly don't have that problem on the roads in NYC. The bounce is annoying though.

Thanks for the great info.

The end at the speedo head could be a little to long.

So it pushes the revolving revolving magnet into the needle assembly, which would make the speedo read high.........

Good point Ed. Perhaps something is rubbing, or has torqued the head’s baring to one side a bit.

The genuine Chrysler part should work if you can't modify that after market long cable.

If you still have the old cable, check it to see how long the end is compared to your 80 incher, and if needed gently adjust its length.

Success! Mostly. The new, shorter cable is an exact match to OEM. The bounce is mostly gone now. Speed reading is back to five miles an hour off. Next project will be to sort out the speedo gear. Thanks for the help. Travis

I've determined that I have a 2.75 rear end gear ratio and after consulting the mentioned chart it looks like i need a 27 tooth gear. Looking at Year One they have an after market gear for 20 bucks or a OEM for 70. Should I be worried about the after market option?
Thanks, T
