I own a 1969 4 Dodge dart custom. I replaced the alternator. However, there was a third wire with what looked like a resistor on it that led to the starter relay. Due to age the wire fell off. However, it seems that my headlights flash now when I drive. Is this missing wire the cause of my flashing headlights. I have already replaced the voltage regulator. Anyones help on this matter will be truly appreciated.

Sincerely,

When you say "flash", do you mean that the headlights pulse brighter & dimmer, along with the movement of the amperage gauge?

There are two things occuring the headlights go brighter when I press on the accelerator and the ammeter moves to the right. Then dimmer when I take my foot off the accelerator. The bigger problem is that whether the engine is on or not after a few minutes after I have pulled the light switch to "on" my headlights, start to turn off and on their own. I replaced the voltage regulator, but this did not help.I have no idea what could cause this.

Sincerely,

Daniel Drabinsky

This is normal to a certain extent with stock wiring that is 30 plus years old.
What are the rpms when the light gets brighter?
Most SL6 cars idle at 600 rpm, its about 800 rpm when they brighten up.

I found a good regulator that actually kicks in early around 600 rpm. So when it's dark and raining and cold with everything on it stays right above 12.8 volts. I did re- wire the engine harness and installed new connectors at the bulkhead. That helped a lot because the large alternator wire had melted and melted three other wires so my gauges were reading a little off.

Generally, the headlights flashing on and of at intervals, as you stated, indicates a short circuit, in the head light wiring system. It is the built in circuit breaker (in the headlight switch) doing it's job. The first thing to do is find the short, before the breaker is damaged, or the wiring melted. As walpolla posted after market lights can also be the problem, and in that case, yes, add the relays.
