I have a 76 Dart and the carb is shot - been rebuilt twice but has stripped threads, etc and I'm tired of fooling with it. On ebay there are a few new 1945's, one "economaster" that says it's for 1974 models, and another that says it's for 1979 models. Can someone who knows about these carbs look at these and let me know if they'll work for my 76 engine? Is one preferable to the other? The car is a driver.

Thanks.

You can use them but they are hard to rebuild like you said. I have (3) of them and gave up on tuning them. If you want a simple, basic and stable one barrel that provides good mileage, try to find a 1920 Holley Economaster. They were used on taxi cabs back in the day and provide good umph and mileage. Even a new 1920 would be fine. They are very simple dependable carbs for a daily driver.

My preference is to use a 1945, mainly because both my other 225's have them. My Feather Duster had its' carb rebuilt over 15 years ago and still runs great, my other Dart about 8 years ago and same thing. Same guy who rebuilt those was doing this 76 Dart carb and he basically said it's toast. So....back to the ebay carbs question - which would you guys choose?

Thanks,
super

All things being equal? The one for the correct year.

I had OK operation with a 1945, but never cleared 19 mpg. Finally gave up on getting good economy with it and installed an Offy with a 390 Holley and did some timing work, along with some head flowing, and a Feather Duster head pipe. That was my demise!
Mileage on the freeway went up over 23 with my 4 door Valiant. And then went steadily down once the drag racing bug bit hard! I think it's somewhere around 19 mpg now with extensive mods, and 6 seconds quicker. If I'd kept my vacuum advance, it would likely do a lot better!

Seriously though, if you have a guy that does the 1945 well, see if you can find a good core. They really aren't evil, though some will paint them as such.

The 1979 unit looks pretty nice. I would be tempted to bid on that one.

Never had a '79. Are all the connections and linkages similar?

Ceej,

I have used 79 and 1980 Holley 1945's. Mine were stock that came on the engines and yes they were the same. The one in the 2nd eBay link looks just like mine. I am running a stock 79 block right now, while my good 9.5 to 1 engine gets a few more upgrades.

Well, all I can say is I have the original 1945 on my 1980 Aspen. I rebuilt it maybe three times. I think it's a simple carb and easy to rebuild. I rejetted it and richened up the idle and power enrichment circuits. This is accomplished by drilling out the idle feed restriction and power enrichment circuit. This made a big difference in the way the car runs. With a lockup converter and 15 inch wheels, the car returns roughly 22-23 mpg @ 60 mph (~2200 RPM).

You can use just about any 1945 that works with your configuration. With a little tweaking, you can make a big improvement in the way the car performs.

Oh come on!!!!

Considering I watched Doug P run a Feather Duster with a 1945 in the high 17's, and say he jetted it up for E85 during some tests...I don't think you could convince THOR that this carb is anything but evil...I'll have to check with Doug to see what his mileage was since he converted from the A-833 OD to an A904 for racing

I don't know what to do right here; defend my honor by saying its because its Doug P, or get angry, and go spend more money on go-fast parts to regain my dignity at the track....

Maybe I should have him look at my car and tweak it a bit... LOL

I've used the 1945 that I have one 3 different cars and it has always seemed to work well, though I am a much bigger fan of the 1920.

Noticed your post about the carb on your 1976 and was wondering if you could help me with the vacum line routings on mine as I can't seem to find a schematic for these.

Thanks

Check the ENGINE FAQ, Carb section. Also use the "Search function". Many have been posted over the years.
