I am having a helluva time with my 65 Dart right now.
Let me start by saying she has a large crack in the exhaust manifold which is reeking havoc on trying to tune her properly, not to mention the noxcious fumes I get to endure....

Now, I *think* that the choke is shot.
When I either a)step on the gas or b) let my foot off the gas I get NASTY gassy exhaust fumes inside the car. To the point of eyes burning. I have adjusted the mixture myself, had someone else readjust it after me, and it still stinks. Bad. I did find, and will be replacing today, a cracked hose(the vaccuum pod hose). Would that be enough to make the choke work improperly?

Also, I am pretty sure that the mixture screw doesn't work the best. This carb has been rebuilt at least 3 times....I asked THOR if he has one kicking around and I waiting to here back. One way or another I need to replace the carb. I have little faith in it. Oh, and the oil stinks like gas....I know that isn't good. But what do I do?? I just changed the oil a month ago and it is already black and nasty....

I can get her tuned and running good(she needs a lash and timed real bad), at curb idle anyway. When she is running good in curb idle, then she is running WAY too fast in drive. I know that she shouldn't be idling around 35mph. (foot off gas pedal she cruises up the street)

Help. Throw some things out there.

My first thing to do is replace the vaccuum hoses....and a valve cover gasket. That's going to be fun....my first valve lash on my own...yikes!

So, I take it my assumptions are on the right track? 23 views but no input?

You posted symptoms that point to misfiring, but there is not enough information to say why the engine is misfiring. Could easily be the carburetor. Could easily be the ignition. Could easily be mis-adjusted valves. I doubt it's the choke unless it's stuck closed.

I have a decent Carter BBS that would swap right on to see if it is the carb. I can also troubleshoot the ignition system and adjust the valves. Problem is I'm about 40 miles N-NE of Portland.

What are you going to do about replacing the cracked exhaust manifold?

You may want to head-out to the Woodburn race / event this weekend and let a dozen or so Slant Six racers "mess-around" with the car...

Josh-I do believe the choke is being stuck closed. It is very sticky....
I am not sure what i am going to do about the cracked exhaust manifold right now, other than slathering it in JB Weld. May have to make a trip out to Wildcat? Ideally I would like to be able to drop a couple hundred on her exhaust and take her into Larry Jones.

Good call on the Woodburn races.....I wished i would have made it down to DusterIdiot's BBQ.

Here is your "second chance"...
I think there will be DI and BBQ at Woodburn on Saturday, after the racing.

I just got back from the part's store and bought the following: new cap and rotar, plugs and wires, carb rebuild kit(on order), valve cover gasget, vaccuum hose, exhaust tape for the crap weld job.

Josh, I could come to you? I would actually love to learn how to do the valves myself. Make me do it, tell me what to do.

What is the little canister on the back of the dash for the gas gauge? The one in Vera is shot and I can't remember what it is....

Are you still running the original points ignition? Don't forget that poor running can be caused by worn points.

Sure, you can come over. PM me and I'll give you my number or Neil can give it to you. We'll have valve clearance adjustment class and see what we can do to make the car run better. Bring your parts and you might also get oil and filter so we can get the fuel diluted oil out of the crankcase. I don't think a rebuilt kit is going to help your carb at this point, but we can try my Carter.

I'll go through my exhaust manifolds and see if I've got something serviceable! :D

I've got some spare stack gaskets. Probably shouldn't drive far with a cracked manifold though. Get the oil changed out ASAP. Gas in the oil will tear up your bearings quick!

JB Weld won't work on an exhaust manifold. It will burn off and stink like death while it's doing int.
