I’m looking for some help.
It’s time I get serous about getting some good daily performance from my slant six. I have been throwing parts at it for years with no real plan(I want to loose weekend warrior status).
I wanted to get some advice on what to keep and what to pitch. I have a 69 Valiant 2-door with 90k on the original block. No cam or internal modifications. Here are the parts I have bolted on through the years:
Holley 470 cfm Street Avenger
Clifford Aluminum 4 barrel intake
Clifford split headers
Pertronix Flame Thrower HV Coil
Pertronix Igniter in a stock distributor
MSD 6a
MSD plug wires
East Coast Auto 1-wire alternator

Stock style spark plugs gapped at 40
Intake valves set at .010
Exhaust valves set at .020
Timing at 10 to 12 degrees BTDC

Any thoughts on what to keep and a direction to go in for a good driver?

Paul

Increase the static compression to a true 9 to 1
"pocket-port" the cylinder head.
Degree-in the cam.
Recurve the disctibutor

That's a big AMEN to Doc! :D :D :D The Doctor knows......

Did this to mine per Doc's advise in 2007 and wow! What a fun car to drive.......I never thought a SL6 would be so fun to drive with such simple upgrades. :D

Thank you Doc,
Would you keep all the bolt-on's I have now or scrap any? Also what cam should I use?

All your bolt-ons are OK.
What RPM range and "redline" are you after?

I'd be happy with 4500-rpm. It’s just a fun driver and I have no intension to racing it.

The Erson RV-10 / 295 RDP cam would be a good choice.

Paul and Karolina,

While you got the head off, porting, and adding compression, why not install over sized valves, and hardened seats? In the first 10 feet of driving you would notice the increase in performance, and passing will become a pleasure!

I'm running these valves, as well as meny others on the site.

wjajr - agreed! I noticed a good difference from just a port and polish job.
