I've got a '64 a100 van with a 225 & an early 727 (with the cast iron adapter plate). It's been shifting erratically, & rough shifting. I've checked the adjustment on the kickdown rod, fluid level, etc. and just did pressure tests of the line pressure & the front servo line pressure. The trans. was rebuilt 6000 mi. ago. FSM recommends line pres. of 54-60 psi @ 1000 rpm in direct while at oper. temp. I got 80-90 psi. with the front servo a few pounds above that. Thoughts?? The rebuilder said you want 80-90 psi. All of this started when I changed out the radiator to a stock unit from a mustang II radiator. (don't ask).

I'm changing the fluid and filter now, and adjusting bands, should I adjust line pressure as well?

Tom

Do you have a stand alone trans cooler or does the ford  radiator have a trans cooler on it? I had the same problem with my work truck and the cooler was not working and over heating the trans.... just a thought

Both the Ford and the original Dodge units used integral coolers in the radiators.

The mustang radiator was new, installed it on a road trip when I was overheating. The rad. shop flowtested mine & said no, The mustang one was the only one they had that fit in the doghouse so I stuck it in my Dodge. worked fine for a few years, but ran a little hot in stop & go traffic, so I just had my stock rad. recored. When I installed the recored stock rad last week, this trans problem popped up. don't know if it's just a coincidence.
Really interested in the line pressure though. (is it too high?)
Just adjusted the bands to FSM spec. (it tightened them up)
When I drained the fluid, it was pretty shimmery & metallic looking.
When I pulled the pan, there was a good sized amount of gritty metallic mud on the pan & the filter looked pretty dirty.
Changing filter and putting in new fluid now.
Any other suggestions?

Asking a simple question did you flush the trans cooler in re-cored radiator?
