Driving down the road last Saturday, engine started making some noise, so I popped into neutral and let it idle while rolling down the road. Suddenly, oil light is glaring at me, so I shut it off and coasted into a parking lot. Fast-forward to yesterday, and I put a new pump in. The gear on the old pump was tore up bad.

With the pump out, I felt the cam gear and it didn't feel bad or particularly sharp anywhere. So I put in another pump.
Well, driving around town was fine, I got on the freeway and made it about 4 miles before the tapping sound came back, followed by a blinking oil light, so again, I shut it off and coasted off the road.

I need a new Cam. Which also means lifters, and seals. I just put the timing set in last year, so it should still be in good shape.

Why? I wasn't ever really happy with the oil pump that was in there, but for the gear to mysteriously fail like it did confuses me. I'm sure this has happened before to someone. What did you find out?

What pump and gear did you put in it the first and second time?

Also what cam? stock or aftermarket? How long have the pump and cam been in the engine? I have never had an oil pump gear failure, but many others have. See this article.

Stock pump, stock Cam. Both have been together since August last year.

Was it a STOCK pump (aluminum) or an after market replacement pump (cast iron)?

Stock aluminum pump, with old red paint. Can't remember the year of the pump off hand, not that it matters, but it was a 60s unit. The pump I put in the other day was another stock aluminum pump that was a little newer (blue paint vs. Red)

I just had this happen in my dragster last Thursday night. The whole combination had been together for 4 years.
1M cam from Erson, stock oil pump. It took two teeth off the distributor, all off the oil pump and chipped several on the cam.
When I put this motor back together, it will have the same cam, blueprinted oil pump w/ a case hardened gear from Doc, and a new distributor gear. It will also have a cam stop on it this time.

This was the same cam and pump involved in the total of your Valiant last year?

Same Cam, different pump. The other pump was original to the block and it was destroyed in the accident.

Frank, I was just shifting into high gear at 6000 rpms when it let go.
Sounded like a double barrel 12 ga went off in front of me. fire out the top of the carbs and out all of the pipes.
A friend of mine that was with me said it sounded like the whole motor blew, he was in the stands watching.
I have a new cam, lifters and a blueprinted oil pump with hardened gears coming. I will also install a cam stop on the timing cover this time.
I will have to say the car tried to warn me on the previous two passes. It would break up until the rpms got up around 3000, then it would clear out. I guess the distributor gear was getting the worst of it then, as timing was moving around.
