I know that 72 and below used a smaller joint while 73 and above used a bigger one, but what about disc and drum setups?
I have a 71 with all around 9" brakes, and wanting to swap over to the 4 piston KH setup, but was curious if I need an upper A arm & balljoint to match the KH setup knuckle.

I am pretty sure (almost positive!) I used my original 9" drum UCA and joint when I swapped to the KH discs on my '68 Dart.

Yes, the UCA and upper ball joints are the same for the 72 and eariler SBP KH Disc.
Truth is that the Lower control arm is also the same and the only difference with the lower balljoint is the mounting holes, they are larger by 1/16 inch. (drums lower ball joints have 1/2 holes and dics have 9/16 thru holes)

The later Big Lug Disc lower ball joint will not interchange.

Ahh great, thanks guys. So the only front end things I need to swap my 71 to a KH setup is from the spindle outward. Next task is to find the money, then the parts ;)

Pierre,
Im getting ready to do the same swap on my 60Valiant but the guy Im getting mine from cant find but one rotor. I found new rotors a Autozone for 70$ but does anyone know whether or not the new rotors come with the hub or not. from what I have read the early sbp brake rotors were 2 peice deals but does that mean that the rotors come separate or that they were just 2 assembled peices. Thanks for any help.

No, the hubs don't come with the KH rotors, but they would with the single piston 4.5" rotors. Its the earlier KH 4 piston rotors that are two piece, the single piston 73 and up are one piece.

Doc,
Just to clarify, when you say the holes are larger, you mean deeper (as opposed to screw diameter), right? If that is the case then wouldn't the disc ball joint be stronger, or is the drum one plenty sufficient?

The critical thing is that you MUST use the correct size bolts! I believe the ball joints for the K/H disk brakes have been discontinued by Moog (I could be wrong, though), but I believe they have the same centers as the drum brake ball joints, just larger holes. A competent machine shop should be able to enlarge the holes if needed.

But what I'm trying to say is that you should NEVER use 1/2" bolts in 9/16" holes - NEVER! That is flirting with disaster. Things move, metal fatigue sets in...and things break suddenly.

In reference to the comment about the 2-piece K/H rotors...

I worked in an auto parts store from 1978-1985, and part time in a junkyard as well then. The good old days...

*IF* you can find them, nowadays they MAY come as a rotor without the hub, but when the parts were a current item, they were always sold as a hub/rotor assembly, as were many other makes & models that also used a 2-piece rotor (early Ford Mustang / Maverick models come to mind, but there were a bunch of them that used 2-piece rotors). The only 2-piece rotor/hub that I can recall that was sold as a rotor only was for the Corvette - and that was riveted together, not held together with the studs.

They may be made by someone in the aftermarket today as a rotor only.

You can find them, rockauto lists the rotors for $100 in wagner, I just picked 2 up at the local monument in bendix for $77 each. These are rotors only, the guy at the parts counter told me if they are listed as Rotor Assembly they come with hubs, if just rotors then no hubs.

The moog balljoints are still availible, I also got them at the local monument for $73 each (K7021 and K7023 for those interested). Summit lists them for $55 but they are on backorder for a week or two I believe.

Slanted Attitude,

I have some of these hubs/discs for the KH 4pistons. I could part with one if you really need one. Might even be runnable, but no guarantees. At least you would have a hub. Send me a PM.

Maybe this has been mentioned, but try SSBC for a "unicast" version of these that I think they sell - may be pricey, but probably nice.

Lou

MPbrakes shows one that appears to be unicast, for $160 each. For the 0.020" of life these rotors have, I don't think its really worth it. Chances are if you find a setup in the junkyard the rotors won't be useable. By the time I got the rust off and straightend them up, my junkyard rotors ended up being undersized by 0.020"
