New slant6 owner here.
I am converting my '50 F-1 into more of a daily driver instead of a show-truck. My brother has done quite a few volare subframe installs into F-100's and F-1's. I've owned this truck for about 15 years now but never really drove it much with the flathead and non-synchro tranny. I completely stripped the '80 volare and am re-using everything (including wiring harness, steering column,, radiator, etc) except the rear-end/leafs (which I may use on my next project - '50 4dr Ford sedan).

I hope (but I know that I will) upset Ford purists but I look at it as appreciating 2 historical significant automotive legends! A MOPAR slant6 powering a classic FORD truck!

Here's some pics of the conversion. Lately, I have been working on a few things like rad., battery, wiring, driveshaft, steering column, cleaning it up, etc and will update when I get some more pics:

Pretty clean and nice running flathead but she's gotta go. Too much show and not enough "go"! (maybe 100 hp?)


The Volare had about 83k on the odo. I drove it home about 70 miles - pretty nice ride.

Rubber mounted goodness - should be a smooth ride - biscuits were in pretty good shape. Not bad for 2 days' work.


Testing engine fit for the first time - no motor mounts to fabricate! Yay!

Sweet! You will love the improved ride, handling, and braking of the Volare front suspension. Sad to see such a nice Volare be parted, but you can't save them all. This front suspension swap is very popular with old Ford and Dodge pickup guys since you get disc brakes, independent front suspension, and a front sway bar all in one go.

Late for what? Was there a Fopar party or gathering back then that I missed? I was a Marine stationed at Kaneohe Bay that year - not much into trucks at the time.

I got my driveshaft back yesterday, made a fan shroud, battery tray, air cleaner snorkel and installing new A-arm bushings, ball joints, and rubber pieces in the sub-frame.

Still have to mock up the Volare' column, hang the wiring harness neatly and figure out a plan for exhaust.

Oh yeah, one question I have: the truck already had an electric fuel pump mounted for the flathead. Should I use that and block off the engine fuel pump as long as I already have it installed. I even have a spare that I used to carry with me. Any advice much appreciated.

Me... I would run a second fuel line and have both pumps available.
Use the mechanical for low-speed, "around town" driving and switch-on the electric when needed. (to prime the engine or to feed the N2O system)

No just that I put a slant 6 in a Ford (my 53 4-door).

My Ford didn't have an engine in it when i bought it, only the air cooled Ford-o-matic.
