I know that many of you are looking for all-american made products, and that can really be a challenge these days. I also know many of you have good sources for different items, so I hope you don't mind me adding another one to the list. There is a store for BB products, 440source.com, that has an entire section full of guaranteed 100% US made products, and there I found a lightweight, internally regulated Denso type 60 Amp alternator with mounts for a 440 BB at $169.95. From the picture, it seems like it would fit a slantsix if you turn it upside down, if someone has tried mounting one, please tell us if that is correct.

If you take a look at the bottom of this page, and click the picture, you'll find this alternator.

Olaf

That's actually a bracket kit from AR Engineering packaged with a Japanese Denso alternator. That's even Andy's picture on 440 Source.

Adapter kit here: http://www.arengineering.com/alternator ... denso.html

Alternator here: http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/d ... ators.html

Andy makes or used to make a bracket kit to mount a GM 10Si alternator on a slant.

Thank you for the clarification, Joshua.
I have trouble with my own alternator, it needs new diodes and a total rebuild, so I am going to use a 3-wire 105 Amp GM 12si for now. It is a pity the 10si mount seem to place the alternator where my power steering pump is. :(

I don't know about the alternators you've mentioned, but some alternators can be 'clocked'.

The front and rear cases can be assembled in different positions relative to each other to get the rear connections closer to where you want them by just rotating the front and rear sections a bit.

If your stock slant six alternater bracket is the cast iron one on the passenger side of the engine, you can use the stock Nippondenso alternater from a late 90's v-6, v-8 dodge/dacota pickup truck. Don't remember the exact year. first models used a V belt, later ones used a serp belt. It is necessary to remove a 1/4 inch from the front of the bracket. Use the stock wireing including the regulator.

Marketing takes advantage of the general tendency of people to get whatever they want to get from something they see, hear, or read, and not spend much of any time thinking critically about what they think they understand.
Sometimes it's difficult (isn't it?) to resist our desire to feel important by dispensing advice—it's easy to get carried away and conveniently forget that we don't actually understand the advice we're handing out to others. And by "we", I mean "you" in this case, Olaf, but please don't feel singled out; there are lots of people doing the same thing on this and every other internet board. Whether it's babbling about how Economaster carburetors were factory equipment on taxicabs (they weren't; the Economaster was an aftermarket-only carburetor) or regurgitating the sales copy from a company's sell sheet or or PR site as though it were technically sound advice, the internet is full of this. The best thing to do if you can't bring yourself to phrase your observations in such a manner as to make it clear that you are guessing and assuming (or even asking once in awhile, y'know, like, if you're not sure) rather than speaking from knowledge and experience, is to walk away from the keyboard for awhile. To do otherwise is a disservice to those who don't know any better than to believe any block of text that carries an authoritative tone.

There are no "100% new American made Denso style alternators". There are new Denso alternators made in Denso plants in various locations round the world, there are Chinese-made copycats, and there are alternators "remanufactured" in America (which does not count as American manufacture). A careful reader would discern that despite the first link's presence on a "Made in USA!" page somebody appears to have thrown together without much research, there is no claim on the second link that the alternator is 100% new, and there's no claim that it's American made.

Moreover, the alternator being offered is internally-regulated. That's fine as far as function goes, but if either component fails, you're stuck replacing both. No more quick, cheap roadside regulator swaps to get you back on the road.

Furthermore, the price is far higher than necessary. As Charrlie_S accurately states, the '89-'91 Dodge truck/van alternators — Nippondenso, Bosch, or Chrysler-made — are readily adaptable to the stock bracket and compatible with the stock regulator.

Don't forget to upgrade the charging circuit if you upgrade your alternator.

Dan, thank you for setting us straight! As you imply, navigating in the internet jungle may give some nasty surprises, and this was obviously one of them.
Quote:
For those who like to keep their hard earned dollars at home, we've dedicated an entire department to parts which are 100% made in the USA! We don't use the tactics of many other companies, which have 99% of the thier work done overseas, and the final 1% done in the USA, and then try to sell the parts as "Handmade by American Craftsman." You can be sure that all of the many pages of parts listed in the section are genuinely 100% made in the USA from materials also of US origin.
What really surprises me, is that a seemingly reputable company will risk that reputation by serving a text like the one above. Well, I learned another lesson, sorry for misleading you guys.

Hey Dan, please don't be angry with me for saying what many of us feel; We respect your decision to just hover in the background, but we hope you will change your mind. As this very example show, we really need you here up front as a headmaster!
On the downside:
You'll have to educate a lot of new and old pupils every year, pupils that apparently cannot read and have stale pudding between their ears, and who ask the same stupid questions over and over again, and who state the same dead certain inaccuracies over and over again!
And then there are the seniors as well!
If you have strands of hair left that can be torn out by frustration, they most likely will be!
And you probably won't get cake very often for your efforts either, you even risk that someone throws it at you!

On the upside:
Letting out some of all that locked-in knowledge may make you feel even happier, and you will maybe ease that terrible tingling feeling in the fingertips hovering over the keyboard as you read our ramblings, and once in a while some poor soul may actually utter 'Thank You, Dan'!

So, please?

Olaf.
