Presently, we have been having weird issues of what we believe are carb problems. We have rebuilt the carb, new water pump, new filters, etc..

I just think it is old..it has only 34 k miles on it but when you run a unlit torch around the bottom it while it us running, the engine speeds up so I suspect the car is guzzling through the sloppy linkages.

The car is my daughters and we are not flush with coin..I think there is a gent on this forum that is not happy with reman carbs..I happen to have a 650 4barrel but that would not work on this car I suspect..she is not happy that she cannot drive it w/o stalling, etc..

What should I be looking for in a carb ??

Thanks
Grassy

I'm no carburetor expert but I think a 650 (holley?) is waaaaay to big. What carburetor does it have now.

What sort of carb is it ?
Have you used an adapter plate of some sort,it could be warped.
The carb base could be warped, can happen.

Hi,

It is a single barrel Holley. The engine has only 34K miles on it.

We have put a carb kit in it and fixed the floats..it isn' t getting enough gas for the air coming in ..

Not sure about the warped plate..I have a chance to borrow a 2 barrel and a one barrel..which one would be better ?

The 650 holley is for a crate 360 I have.. :)

Thanks
Ian.

Let us back up a few steps first. A) what year and kind of car are we talking about?(we know it has 34K miles)
If the car had a one barrel stay with the one barrel. Do not make more problems yet.
Can you take a picture of the carb with out the air cleaner on?

The first thing I would check is carb to manifold bolt/nut tightness and carb base gasket while checking for carb base flatness. I use a Felpro f/Napa as the carb kit base gaskets I have seen are thinner. Just a thought Mike

Sorry, it is a '75 Duster. From what I gather, they were all one bbl but had an optional 4bbl...I know it doesn't that that. When it stops pouring, I will take a pic.

All nuts tightened..didn't notice a thinner gasket but will check, hadn't thought of that..thanks.

I sound like a twit but I have spent 30 years with brit carbs and solexs are so easy..

Symptoms...fixed the choke.

Car starts ..if you put your foot on the gas, it will stall..t could be a "cold engine' requiring long warm up time. Sometimes, even when it feels right, it will stall on the road especially if you are going up a hill and press more on the gas..it is OK if you stomp on the gas and pop it into kickdown mode.

Any/all help is appreciated.

How tight is the choke when stone cold? Should be firmly closed but not to tight. Is the choke pull off working? Is it opening to soon or to much? How is the hot idle? How is the PCV system and valve (does it rattle)?

No rattling but before I increased the idle rpm when choked.

We have had a period of 'run on" and backfiring through the carb since we put a carb kit into it.. haven't driven the car much since the change.

It still isn't getting enough gas when accelerating slowly..what my daughter does is find a pressure on the gas petal that the engine seems to like and goes up hills that way..slamming down on the petal to push it into passing gear works but it tales a car with lousy gas mileage into a car with even worst gas mileage. :)

Your PCV valve should rattle-if not try cleaning it or just replace it-they are not a lot of money.

As for the air leak on carb
Quote:
when you run a unlit torch around the bottom it while it us running, the engine speeds up
also check condition of all the vacuum lines around the carb

It sounds like it deffinetly has a vacuum leak.
like everyone else said make sure the manifold is not warped and that you are getting a good seal.
otherwise it sounds like it could be a bad pcv valve.
same sypmtoms were happening with my car when i first got it but a carb rebuild and a new pcv straightened it right out.

I am borrowing another carb next week so I can do a comparison . The comment on the PCV valve is interesting..not expensive so I will toss one on as well.

I will report what happens.

Thanks all.

Just wondering have you checked the EGR valve mounting bolts/gasket?
you could be getting a leak there
