Hi,

I find while driving every now and again my 904 slips. Being mechanically minded and wanting to save money I'm thinking of doing the rebuild myself...

Does anyone know of a good instruction manual or book etc specifically for the 904?

I'm planning on using this kit:

http://www.pentastarparts.com.au/sunsho ... ail&p=2202

Just a minimum rebuild kit as I plan to start small.

Locally i've been quoted around $1000 for a full rebuild :/ think I'm getting ripped.

Hoping I won't need to many specialist tools, if any?

I searched for this online and on the site couldn't find much, any help would be appreciated.

Try www.atsgmiami.com for a manual that seems decent for about $30
(NO I do not work for them)

Hi,good suggestion, those manuals are about the best you can get, don`t forget the factory service manuals, plenty of good bits there too,
JC Whitney used to have a step by step video for torqueflites, I don`t know if they still offer it or not,
Tools,a good pick, feeler gauges, and on a 904 pump,if you disassemble it,you will need a pump alignment tool, kinda like a large band clamp thing used to align the pump halves while bolting it back together.
Yes you can definetly do it yourself, take your time and ask questions. :D

Oh,I forgot, you will need a pair of pump knockers, like a slide hammer to thread in the pump for removal.

I used long bolts and washers with two sledge hammer heads we had laying around and they worked great. Cheap too, when compared to the purpose built tools.

This is the book I used and it helped a lot. I'm sure the other one is great too.

There is a good rebuild manual in the FAQ in this section. I managed to do my first rebuild using this one. After 7000 miles it still runs great.

You'll need a clean workbench, lots of space for all the parts and tiny bits, and patience. Then it is not that hard.

I would change the bands too if you have it disassembled . They are not that expensive and it is a lot of work to change them later. If the play on the planetary gears set is within specs i would not touch it.

You'll need a pressure gauge to set the line pressure after reassembly.

..and the price of the kit seems high to me. Rockauto sells an atp kit for about 50 usd, and it is not that heavy and not so expensive to ship abroad.

Rebuild kit for $66 plus shipping

I got one of these for the transmission that is going to eventually go in my brother's 74 Duster. Haven't used it, but it is very complete. However, it doesn't have the seal that goes around the driveshaft at the back of the tranny. Odd.

It is a lot of work. So if you have it disassembled i would change the lot. Then you'll need:

- a master rebuild kit
- a bushing kit
- front and reverse band

Together something about 100 usd excl. shipping.
