just FYI - the dome light is different from all other lights in the car; it is *grounded* at the headlight switch and at the door switches. You ought to find +12V w.r.t. ground at the dome light all the time the battery is connected. I've seen guys put the wrong light bulb in there, so I'd start testing right there at the light and find which side isn't working.

I believe:

Dome lights use yellow conductor
Dash lights use orange conductor

I think a pink wire is usually used for the dome light +12V feed.

Well, 1967 Dart used these colors per FM. Check FM conductor size & color decoder chart for your year to be sure.

My convertible has no dome light, but has rear seat floor lamps, and under dash foot well lamps. I forgot about the two wire feed & ground set-up these lights utilize. Sorry.

M1 conductor is 18 gage & pink which is involved with dome light. It is the feed, controlled by dimmer in the headlight switch, to lamp holders for all interior cockpit lighting, not dash lights.

M2 conductor is 18 gage & yellow it runs to door switches from lamp holders and acts as a ground for all interior cockpit lighting, not dash. When doors are open, switch closes to ground, and lights come on.

It,s easy to test the headlight switch for this problem.Find the 3-5A fuse marked 'INST LPS' in your fuse block.then use an icepick style voltage tester to check for power.turn your lights on,and twist the dimmer knob back and forth.you should see your tester get dim and get brighter.No power?then it probly is your switc.h

My dash lights only seem to work when it's really rainy out. Dome and headlights work fine, and the turn signal and brights indicator lights work as well. The trans lights on the push button and the gauges is intermittent. Would that be the rheostat going bad, or perhaps just has so much patina after 47 yrs it needs some cleaning?

I once traced a funny dome light problem down to the wrong lightbulb being in there... if I remember correctly, both sides of the dome light are normally hot w.r.t. ground, and the light is turned on by shorting (usually pink?) wires to ground at the door switches or at the headlight switch. I would first look for a shorted door switch (you can unplug each one, but may have to remove the kickpanel to reach it), then I'd unplug the headlight switch to see if it goes out. If none of those 3 turn it off, you probably have a short
in the low side wiring - look right at the dome light itself 1st.

I did for awhile as well, but found a small clip on light that clipped to my steering wheel, lets me see the speedo, temp, and ammeter. And now I have found another thing to try to see if i can fix the silly dash lights. Does anyone know where to get new pigtails for the headlight switch? Mine's kinda questionable.
