Was just wondering if anyone knew if you can use an Chrysler 318 auto vibration damper (regular rotation) on a marnie Chrysler 318 (reverse rotation)?

thanks for the help

As long as the belt groove is useful, it makes no difference which direction the balancer rotates. The mass of the outer ring is selected based on the crank shaft length and harmonic effect on the crank shaft from each power impulse at certain engine speeds. This damps torsional twisting effects on the crankshaft to reduce metal fatigue.
The damper only does "Work" at harmonic producing engine rpm's.

You can make your own timing mark if you have a piston stop tool.

The top point (zero) marking should be the same, but the timing advance marks will be retard marks in reverse. As Reed says, you can make your own, but even if you find a damper with plenty marks on each side of zero, you should check it for correct top point anyway, the rings slip with age.

Yea, that is what happened with my old one, it sliped and now the timing mark is way off, I put a piston stop in and made a mark that is close to correct, but seems to be off a little and i am not skilled in listening to an engine and being able to tell what is perfect. I think I will try to find a new one from an auto store and compare it to the mark I made on my old one, and if it is off I will just mark it correctly. I cant really afford a $400 vib damper, which is what they want for my "marine" engine. Thanks for everyones help. And any other tips are appreciated.

Take a look at the details for this damper from KMJ Performance (fits all 318's). It is marked from 10° retard to 50 ° advance, so you can easily add your own extra marks.

I recently bought one for a 318 I am building, only $69.00, looks fabulous.

KMJ Performance actually replaced a SL6 chrome valve cover that was slightly scratched, they just sent me a new one along with the damper I ordered. Guys, we talk about a valve cover for $19.50, and I live in Norway!

This company is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for their excellent service, and they have low prices too.

Some of those great looking Chinese dampers have been coming apart. For a little more money you can get a Pioneer brand damper. I used one on the mild 318 in my road racing '66 Dart. It's been going for about 8 years now.

Summit has a better price than Northern if you can afford to wait for the special order. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PIO-DA318
