Hi -

I want to do an engine tune up and ideally I wanted to use the forum recommended parts - Bluestreak CH410X distributor cap, NGK ZFR5N spark plugs gapped to .04" and mo3000 long-tip rotor.

Well, like seemingly many other people, I don't think I can get my hands on the correct, tan mo3000. I called NAPA and the guy was hesitant to even sell me the part because it didn't come up for my vehicle. After I reassured him, he said he could order the MO3000 but there was no way to check if it was the correct part, the system showed the black MO3000 and he could only see the tan MO13.

He said I'd have to come in and pre-pay for the part and if a few days later the wrong part arrived, I'd have to pay a 15% restocking fee.

So - first question is - if I can't get the MO3000 should I also not bother getting the ch410x cap and zfr5n spark plugs?

Secondly: If so, is there a set of 'second best' parts that I should consider getting if I cant find the MO3000?

thanks & happy holidays!

I would take your old rotor in with you or have them pull the stock one and use it to measure the MO-3000 when it comes in. You can easily tell that the tip is .060 longer. They are made from medium brown plastic. I ordered (2) last time I was at a NAPA.

Yes, get the BlueStreak cap, they use copper in them instead of aluminum. The NGK plugs are also a great plus.

All three are well worth the effort! I also went with some 8mm wires.

Hi swinger73. Good to see that there are others that browse the forum before doing any work on car or engine!

Regarding recent changes for the CH410 distributor cap, take a look at the text and pics in this thread.

As far as I know, the only source for MO-3000 rotor other than Napa itself, is D & M Auto Parts.

If ordering online, use their search function and search for part number mo3000 and brand ECH to find it. If ordering by email, use the part number MO3000.

Olaf.

Olaf - so are you suggesting that it might not be worth it getting the bluestreak X these days? Maybe just go for the CH410?

Thanks, did they deliver the correct brown plastic long-tip rotor when you ordered from NAPA or did they have to send it back and try again before you got it?

Both NAPA and D&M show black plastic rotors as their MO3000's. Is that just an incorrect picture or do they box both the long-tip tan rotors and the incorrect black ones as "MO3000" and it's just trial and error until you get the right one?

thanks again

The stocking fee is probably BS, probably said that to deter you because he didn't feel like making the effort. I've made friends with the guys at my local NAPA so they actually find things for me...

Yes they were the correct rotors. I had to go through the same drill.....don't tell them what it's for. That always takes you down a bunny trail.

Generic picture of a rotor in the catalog. That was the same nonsense I went through, but they arrived as the correct part.

Hi swinger73, as you see from the text in the link, it seems Standard are dropping the X-versions, maybe they have upgraded the ordinary versions, I got the CH410 cap from a dealer here in Norway.

The long-tip rotor is more important if you want to run extra large gaps in the spark plugs, when using a ordinary dizzy cap you may just have replace the cap more often if the alloy in the posts are eroded more quickly.

Just remember, all these high performance parts are just an extra icing on the cake that may (or may not!) give some extra power and/or improved milage, as well as extended product life.

You'll get by with ordinary parts just fine, just keep them upgraded and in good shape at all times.

Olaf.

Generic pictures. I too have ordered from NAPA recently and no Problems. Occasionaly the MO3000 wont be the correct part but just have them reorder and it will be. (miss boxed I guess). I order three at a time and have ALWAYS gotten at least 2 correct. Open them at the counter if one is black and short then show them and they will correct it.
As for the 410 order the X but check for out of round drilling of the contacts. You can look and see this easy again if its not right complain.

A comment to Charrlie_S:
From earlier threads about the subject, I have gotten the impression that the CH410 dizzy cap had aluminum posts. As you can see from the pictures I posted, the CH410 cap I got has posts of some kind of copper alloy, as I say in the text they are darker than the posts in the CH410X cap, the X cap's posts look more like brass. Maybe Standard got a new manufacturing plant for their caps, or something like that?

Well, OK, since you're pushing that hard I'll take it, but only if the color is 'sublime' green and it has the original tires! 8)

In my mind... the most important part of a 60-81 SL6 engine tune-up is... adjusting the valve lash.
