For alternators that are the "squareback" style - Using an electronic voltage regulator there are 2 wires... one blue and one green. If the position of the wires leading to the alternator were to be swapped would there be any damage done to the Charging circuit or to the Voltagr regulator or alternator?

Greg are you updating the alt/voltage regulator?
If so the wire from alt + goes to ign switch alt - goes to regulator.

Hello Richard,

Well I sorta am, But I am using a nippondenso type alternator and It has 2 green wires (one with an orange tracer) instead of the usual one blue and one green.


Just trying to figure out if I would fry anything if I crossed them.

If the alternator has 2 field wires it doesn't matter which way they are connected. Is the Nippondenso alternator one from/for a Chrysler product? If so it should have 2 field wires and they can be swapped just like an old Chrysler alt.

I had a chrysler type nippondenso That was easy ' cause I cut the Wiring off of the Truck it came off of so I just marked the Green and Blue from the wire Mold I got with that alt.


I am switching Ruster over to a low mount alt on the drivers' side where the Power steering pump usually resides.

I had to do this due to tossing an alt Belt on about every run near the end of the summer. I went from a 51" v belt to a 35" :-)


The small nippondenso I got at a swap meet - I am not sure of the car it's off of, but it was setup for racing with a light aluminum pulley. It has a plug with 2 green wires instead of the Chrysler style nippondenso with the 2 posts.

Thanks for answering my question Josh.. I know that If I can flip the old blue / green wires then this will all work out.

Greg,

Are the terminals of the plug of the little Nippondenso alternator labeled? Many times letters will be cast into the housing near the plug. I'm trying to make certain that alternator is not internally regulated.

Well I cannot find any stampings on these pics... Except for the "B" near the large ring terminal which I am assuming is for battery.


Also if the alt was internally regulated wouldn't it only have one wire?

Internally regulated alternators usually have B+ terminal to the battery, a wire to switch the alternator on and off that is connected to switched 12V and a sense wire that is used by the regulator to get the voltage of the system near to the load. The sense wire on most GM SI alternators is connected to the B+ wire in the harness.

I used an RX-7 alternator on my '66 Dart around 1996 because it was free. A few washers to shim it out for belt alignment, bypass the regulator and connect the field wire to the internal regulator's R terminal. Charging at idle was vastly improved.

I started it up and ran the car today to turn it around in the garage to work on the other side's doors.

No aparrent problems with the New alternator arragement.
