Has any body ever heard of installing a balancer from a 440 big block onto a slant 6?

I had a customer in my shop this week and we got to talking about slant 6's and he stated to me that if you want a slant six to run very smooth, use a balancer from a 440. He didn't say if you use one from a cast crank, steel crank, or 6 pack crank. Of coarse you would have to make a new timing mark.

If any body has tried this, let me know how it worked out, or if its bull.
Thanks

A 440 balancer can be installed on a slant, but you get into the issue of the belts not aligning. It must be a 440 forged crank item.

I dont know if it will make the car run any smoother fprovided the original balancer is in good working order it should be plenty smooth.. THe rubber needs to be not all dry and cracked...... etc. and the slant one should be fine.

Thoughts.???

I agree. The only reason I could see for using a 440 balancer, would be for a race car, that required a SFI approved balancer, and one was not available for the slant.
Possibly, also, to make it easier to mount accesory drives like, crank trigger, belt drive oil pump, belt drive blower setup, etc.

I'm using an ATI Super Damper for a small block Dodge on my race 170. I'm about to go shorten the hub .625" so it fits up to the timing cover. It's a used NASCAR piece I got for $165 and has the Chevy 3-bolt pattern on the front so pulleys are easy. Still, the drive belt will be moved forward. Once I have the pulley in hand I can report back how much it moved, but it's going to be right about where the PS pulley bolts on.

i used the 440 forged damper on my high comp engine and the blown engine, i had a groove machined in it to fit the 3/8" belt with no problems. when i went to the 4-71 blower with 2" drive i started cracking the damper at the keyway, after the third time i put the stock damper on and it`s been there ever since with no cracking. a little note here , when it comes to matching pulley bolt patterns the larger 3/8" tapped hole in a stock slantsix damper are the same as the small block chev, so any 3 bolt crank pulley can be bolted on with no modification.

ATI will build you a custom Slant 6 damper, if you want to go that far. They have built many of them before for some of our racers.

Another options is the Romac damper from Australia. Nice piece. If you are talking street driver, or anything under 5500 RPM or so, stock damper will be just fine. Try to get one later than about 64, since I think the earlier ones were more prone to slipping and coming apart.
