The last couple days I started noticing that my ammeter was reading oddly. It would read a slight charge and then drop back to neutral. Also, it seems it has been charging more often than usual. I've also seen it jump around a bit while at a steady cruising speed.

Could this be my voltage regulator, and does anybody have advice on testing this?

Is it more likely to be the alternator? Or maybe my ammeter? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The cheap wells replacement electronic regulator I got to replace my points regulator did that just before it failed...........


Ended up making my own more robust electronic regulator in the case of an old points regulator.........

Awesome... :\

So, any suggestions for a new voltage regulator? I'd prefer a newer style electronic (solid-state) regulator over the older analog style. Something like the NAPA VR1001 (apparently it will take a whole week to get one of those).

When brushes start to go bad you can get similar problems - they're cheap and easy to replace.

Right on. I have returned I don't know how many BWD units because they were DOA. I wont buy a regulator from them ever again. I have had better luck with the Duralast brand from Autozone.

When you pick up that regulator, make sure that you see if you can bring it in for exchange/refund before you take it out of the box. Generally speaking, once you purchase an electrical item and you install it, its yours for life.

Wish I would've known before I got it. :\
I tried getting the NAPA VR1001, but it was going to take 2 weeks and they wanted to charge me the shipping ($14), wasn't going to happen. In the next few weeks I'll be making my own to be placed in my old stock case.

The BWD unit does have a "lifetime warranty" just hope I never have to use it :roll:
