If I make a box to bolt to the bottom of my intake and run coolant through it will it heat the intake enough to be driveable in cold weather? I want to install a header.

There are manifolds set up exactly like that.
That modification will improve cold weather driveability.

It will also improve warm weather drivability. For those people using a large carb on the street, an intake manifold heater reduces the accelerator pump shot required. Only drag-racers (wide open throttle operation) will not benefit.

A good header for a stock 78 super six in a Aspen? I also have a MSD box will it help much? I like gas mileage and good steady pull up to speed. Thanks for the help ya'all.

Looks like most guys have been going to Hooker because you can get them from Jegs or Summit. 66 cuda Frank has them too on this site.
I never thought I would be a fan of MSD but I will share a short story. I've had a 6A siting on the shelf for about 3-4 years, new in the box. After putting 12K plus miles on my 63 Valiant it donned on me that this thing has ''points'' and I better tune this thing up. It never was hard to start but would stall several times if I didn't let it warm up fully.I was constantly messing with the carb and choke, timing, etc, to make it better.Never got it quite right or so I thought. After new plugs and points, I said what the heck lets try this thing. After reading the instructions and installing the MSD I went with new 8mm wires and a up graded coil. What a difference. Now after about 60 seconds running I kick it off fast idle and drop it in gear and away I go. I'm sure it was the combination of a good tune up and the MSD. I did no carb or choke adjustments other than setting hot idle speed. So if you got one try it. Now this is just me,,Your results may vary..

To answer your question; yes, a hydronicly heated chamber under the carburetor will greatly improve cool & cold weather drivability of a header equipped /6. I installed a home made hot-spot after suffering what turned out to be carburetor icing below 35 degrees. The engine would not idle, fuel consumption doubled, and drivability sucked.

During summer, my engine was extremely cold-blooded requiring several minutes of warm-up before a cold start drive-off. My Holley electric choke was pulling off way to soon, so I installed a device to slow down heating of the bi-metal choke coil, which slowed the opening of the choke, called a thermistor. All it dose is change the voltage feeding the choke in relation to coolant temperature, so the choke opens as the coolant warms.

Between the hot spot & thermistor, the engine starts and runs nicely from stone cold, and as well from warm starts in any season.

On the “Engineâ€￾ page I have several threads on this “hot spotâ€￾ project. They can be located by using the “Searchâ€￾ function. Look for “hot spotâ€￾ by wjajr.
