Alright, this is a new one to me. I've noticed a strange noise from the front of my engine for a little while, but could never chase it down. Today I popped the hood with the car running and saw sparks where coming from the bottom of the water pump pulley/top of the crank pulley. Check the two confirmed that the rear lip of the water pump pulley is contacting the crank pulley! I plan on tearing down accessory drive to find out WTF is going on, but is the clearance here really THAT tight? It is a '75 Duster with factory A/C and PS if that matters. Anyone else seen this happen before?

Sounds as though the water pump bearing is worn or you may have some loose bolts.
Hope this helps................Max

I have never seen this happen but if the incorrect diameter water pump pulled got on there I could easily understand how this would happen.

Well I found the culprit. The crank dampner is cracked right at the keyway. I'd bet that the "mechanic" who previously worked on the car merely hammered the dampner back on instead of using an installer. The dampner slid off in my hands. It has probably been like that since for a long time. The only thing holding it in place was the accessory belts. I'm ticked that I have to buy a $$$ dampner, but glad that I was lucky that it didn't fly apart on my at 75mph on the 285.

I have wasted the last hour online trying to find a balancer. What a cluster fsck. Prices range from $150 to over $300! WTF? Advance Auto Parts doesn't carry a slant six balancer at all, which sucks as I have a 20% off discount code. The best I could do was Summit Racing which still puts me at $150. I swear I'm tempted to just slap a bolt on the old balancer and call it a day.

O'Reilly has one for $160

Summit has one for $150

That is pretty much it for what I can find. I refuse to pay $300 for AutoZone's part, nor do I need a high dollar Romac unit.

How about $113 for a brand new damper made in Australia? I have one and it's nice.

Hmmm, that is one of the better aftermarket pieces I've seen mentioned on this board. That might be the ticket.

The one josh is reccommending is the same as the one in the 'oreily's link...

For less ca$h.

I have dealt with maddog before on ebay - No troubles there.

I personally would steer away from the pioneer stuff in the summit link.

also look up kiwijohn05 on ebay - He might have an NOS / OEM piece Is this for a forged or cast crank engine??

Well I bought the PowerBond unit from Mad Dog Racing. When it comes in we'll see how things go. Big thanks to Charrlie_S for giving me some other options to think about.

Alright, I got the new PowerBond unit installed.

I ended up going to Ace Hardware and getting a bolt and a few washers for the crank. Turns out my harmonic balancer tool is useless with the radiator still in the car. I just slapped a few washers on the bolt and used it to pull the harmonic balancer onto the crank. No problem.

BTW, the PowerBond unit has two timing marks on it, one of which lined up with my old balancer perfectly. My crank drive pulleys (I have factory A/C) bolted up perfectly. I swear the car is running smoother now as well (placebo effect?).

Shipping was free and pretty quick from Mad Dog. I'll use them again in the future.
