I found this car about 10 miles from my house. It's the first rehab I've ever tried.

I had no idea when I got it that it was a first year Dart, first year /6, unibody. The car is almost exactly as old as I am, give or take a few days.

Floor was gone, so I bought a mig welder and learned why its tough to weld rusty metal. I took the car to bare metal, descaled the interior, bagged and tagged everything I could and went berserk.

Orange peel mania. The Nason I sprayed called for enough reducer to make the paint spray. The EPA calls for so little reducer that orange peel is inevitable. Subsequent attempts have yielded better results with substantially more reducer.

I have also sprayed rustoleum products cut with mineral spirits and no catalyst with remarkable results.

Although the car has no fuse box and very few factory accessories, there are still plenty of wires under the dash as well as vacuum pots and hoses for the heater controls.

Repainting the dash made me intimate with them all-mostly.

What color are you going to paint it?I really love the body style of the 59 to 61 autos.

Fantastic looking car you got there - almost as good looking as the '60 Plymouth

I'm interested in how you've done in the past with the Rustoleum. I'm looking into the roller paint job idea using rustoleum. For me a spray job is out because I just don't have the space to do it inside, and would paint everyone elses car if I tried it outside.

When did you start work on the Dart?? Keep us posted!

My dad had a 60 or 61 pioneer a while back.. I always thought these would make great restomod slammed cars totally customized.

Of course I totally like the approach you are doing as well.

I painted the truck right where it is and had no overspray issues. No orange peel, runs or gas bubbles. Rustoleum wet sands well and the Ace version can be mixed to any color you want as long as it's a solid color.

The robin egg was a factory color for the year, so that's what I picked.

There are quite a few good threads on roller painting w/ rustoleum. I'm certain you could get great results that way. Rustoleum does not have UV protectants so It may fade over time.

I got the car 3 yrs ago and promptly bagged and tagged it. Welded and rough mechanical repairs (tires, brakes, tune up, timing set, etc), then let it sit for a year and a half out of fear of painting.
I got a bug up my butt and decided that anything worth doing is worth doing badly, and painted it and reassembled it in about a month.

The paint I used on the Dodge is Nason 1 step acrylic enamel w/ hardener. Good (not great) paint. Due to EPA rules on solvent content, the can recommends a fairly thick mix. This led to quite a bit of gassing (leaving bubble like imperfections). Next time around I will reduce half again as much and expect much better results.
I tried thinning rustoleum with laquer thinner but the gassing was similar, so I tried again w/ mineral spirits and the difference was night and day.
Note : bug legs are a lot easier to wet sand out than bubbles or runs!

After trying to make the tired old engine idle, I replaced the points w/ a Pertronix conversion.
After a short time it ran poorly again, I discovered a bad distributor, so I went with an Autozone rebuild. I used the points/condenser that came with it and they failed soon after. Good quality ignition parts solved the problem for awhile.

My intent is to rebuild the motor nearly stock, then apply 5 lbs of boost for economy.

Sooner or later I will need an MSD to advance the timing so I deecided on SlantSixDan's HEI upgrade.

I wish the instructions that come with everything I buy were as thorough and accurate as his.
