Just double checking before I dive into a new transmission project:

Will all parts from a 1968 318 904 physically bolt into a 1983 225 904T case? Specifically, will the front pump from the 318 tranny bolt right into the 225 case?

I am fairly certain that all internal parts swap between the cases, but I just wanted to make sure before I got halfway through the project only to find that I had made yet another bonehead move by not confirming the parts would fit before I tore everything down.

Thanks.

My best suggestion would be MEASURE including spline count.

I hope to use the front pump, clutches, bands, and valve body from the 318 transmission, and the case, gearset, and governor from the 225 transmission. I am abandoning the lockup features of the 904. Spline count shouldn't matter then, right?

You will need to use the non- lockup converter also.

Roger- that's the plan. Currently have a non-lockup converter out of an 86 Dodge van. Yes, they did make non-lockup 904s for slant sixes in 86. California emissions trucks and vans had them, and that's where I got mine.

The gearset should also interchange, if you have maybe a low 1st 2nd in one of them. Look at the sun gear (thats the one both planetaries go over) if both sides are the same std gear ratio if one side is larger than the other, you have the low 1st 2nd.

I havn't tried it,but I don't think the '68 valve body will work in your '83 case.Pre '70 V-8 904s and pre '73 S/6 904s took a different VB that didn't have a 1-2 shift control valve or the 3rd hyd. circuit to the accumulator.-simple man's terms,I don't think the hyd. systems are compatible. If you insist on keeping a 904, keep the valve body with the case, and put your V-8 parts in.

I plan on keeping the 904T gears and governor, and swapping the part throttle kickdown assembly to the 68 valve body.

Hi guys, I have a '68 904 from a 318, and would like to beef up my '77 904 lock-up. Will I be in the same situation as Reed, or are there changes in the years between '77 and '83?
BTW, the 904 in my car is a lock-up, and it is supposed to be the original transmission, but according to different sources they came first time in '78.

Olaf.

Most changes where done before that, the governor wad changed in 73/74 and they changed the gear change lever in 70/71, the lockup did come in 78 but there is no reason why there could not be a late 77 with lockup, a normal year does not have much to do with a Chrysler year...

Like I said, never tried it,but I'm not too sure a '68 V-8 VB will work in an '83 S/6 case. Here, look at the pics. Both pics are from a 1971 plymouth service manual with the trans shifter in "drive" and in second gear "kickdown"Image
This is a S/6 904 trans vs a V-8 trans.Look at the differance with no 1-2 shift control valve, and no 3rd circuit to the accumulator.Image
The safest bet is to NOT mix and match parts between L-U and non L-U trans, and keep the valve body matched to the trans case.

Hmmmmmm. I'm not mixing lockup parts with nonlockup beyond the part throttle kickdown and the gears and governor. The valve body and clutches and bands will stay together. &1 was before the v-8 tranny's had the part throttle kickdown but after slant trannys did, right?

O.K. maybe I misunderstood,I thought you were trying to put the "68 V-8 VB in the '83 S-6 case.Or are you confusing the 3-2 part throttle kick-down module for what I'm talking about?

Plan- 68 valve body into 83 case, but adding the 83 part throttle kickdown mini-valvebody to the 68 valve body. So, 68 318 valvebody, cltches, drums, bands, 83 case, gears, governor, and part throttle kickdown mini-valvebody. THe part throttle kickdown is a separate piece (mini-valve body) that bolts on in place of a flat plate on the 68 valve body.

Right? :?

Right?

Reed, I have no idea if it will work, But---

Part throttle kick down would be nice. My LeBaron has that feature, it also has a progressive carburetor, I like the way it all works.

If you are using a Holley, you may want to try a two stage power valve. Under light acceleration, part throttle, the power valve provides less than full enrichment. Under WOT it will fully open giving full enrichment. This was designed for heavy or under powered vehicles, like my 92 HP torque monster K-Car…
