hello all.
I just replaced my points today after pulling out all my hair and freeking out alot about mis diagnosis of my problem.

I ended up finding my points were horribly burned up - and set way too close together.

luckly I had a spare set - and a spare dist. laying about for parts.
got it all in and its running great
BUT
I know this will eventually happen again.
and I would like to find and or collect all the parts I would need to eliminate the points all together
so that in a month or 2 I can pull the dist. 1 last time and install all the good stuff.

what do I need
and where do I get it all at ?

do I still need to use the voltage reducer if I remove the points ?
( the white ceramic thing mounted on the fire wall )
or do I need to change my ignition coil also to handle a full 12v to it ?

It depends on if your going to run a mopar electronic ignition or something else.

Look up the HEI conversion in the FAQ above. As long as your changing out, might as well get the best ignition for your dollar. The HEI is an inexpensive upgrade that, once set up, will perform very well.

The simplest is to just put a Pertronix Ignition inside your existing distributor replacing the points............

I like the Pertronix myself. By far the simplest thing to use and not much more expensive than HEI or Mopar elec ign.

Often I read of folks freaking out over points. We forget forty years post manufacture of these cars that service intervals were much shorter than today’s vehicles.

My 1967 Owner’s manual lists 12,000 mile inspection of plugs, points, carburetor adjustment, and valve lash. Additionally the cam activating the ignition points to be cleaned & oiled every six months.

When I was driving a points Dart in the early seventies I always tuned up engine, changed points, condenser & plugs every 12,000 miles regardless of condition, and tried to time it with the onset of winter. Winter causing the hardest starting conditions requiring the freshest of tune, and that baby would start at 25 below zero, and had to often many times each winter.

If your points are properly maintained, you should not have any problem. However if you are tired of accessing the little darlings, and want hotter spark, better idle, than up-grade to EI.
