I have a set of H2089 lifters in Clevite boxes. There is .190" of plunger travel in these lifters, but this may be different from stock. Also, without knowing your existing lifter preload you won't know how much you can mill from the head and/or block without bottoming out the lifter plunger.

Meh, if custom pushrods are only $40 per set, then it isn't worth the extra effort to do the math to figure out how much you can mill off the head or grind off the cam and still use stock lifters and pushrods.

Custom pushrods are not $40/set.

If you have a dial indicator, put it on the pushrod side of the rocker arm and compress the lifter. You should be able to directly measure how much excess lifter travel you have and, with a margin of safety subtracted out, how much you can mill the head and/or block. You might have to disassemble the lifter to get all the oil out though.

If you had a cam ground with .060" more valve lift the base circle will have to be at least .040" smaller and that can be added to the excess lifter travel.

Since the factory hydraulic cam is ground on such narrow lobe centers I might use a mechanical cam core for a wide lobe separation turbo cam and just have the rear journal grooved for full time oiling.

Hmmmmm. Good info, thanks. I got the $40 figure from that link you posted to the Comp Cams pushrods. OK- well, I guess I will have to do the math then. Buy the brand new hydraulic lifters first, then measure the plunger travel, then do the math on the amount of material than can be safely removed form the cam or the head or the block.
