Today I picked up a complete 8 3/4 taper axle rear end that is believed to be out of a 58 Dodge 1/2 ton pick up. The casting # on the case is
1820657 This is a # that I am not familiar with. Not the normal 741/742/489. I grabbed it cause it was going to scrap and I have found most older trucks and vans had 3.55 or 3.91/4.10 gears in them.
Anyone hear of this # ??

I think that is an early 8 1/4 rearend, they look like 8 3/4s from the outside but had a smaller ring gear.

I believe the 8 3/4 drop out will bolt into one, though.

That is the early (1957 - 64) "small stem" (1 3/8 ) pinion case number.
An "open" carrier unit will have the narrow center thrust block used in the taper axle units.
You would need to change the thrust block to the later style if you want to swap that into a later 'flange type' axle assembly.

Thanks guys, I just couldn't let it go to scrap. Some day when I don't have nuttin' to do I'll take it apart and see the goodies inside.
Again thanks for the info.
