Okay so this is kind of a long story but Ill get straight to the important parts. when I first got my 68 valiant 225/904 the points were gone and the valves were too tight on the int and loose on exh. so it wouldnt run very well. so after installing a petonix kit in the dizzy and got it running I went to adj the valve and noticed gas in the crank case. I finished the adj and decided to rebuild the carb thinking its the floats washing the cyl. carb done and changed the oil. every things running okay but a little on the rich side (carter bbs). checked the oil for a week straight and nothing then it happen again. I thought maybe the fuel pump is leaking. changed it and the oil again. I just did the HEI swap and got the car running but it was running at 25 deg after TDC long enough to get it up to oper temp then after having to pull the dizzy three time i got the timing to 2.5 deg before TDC and running like a champ. but its now a quarter over full on the dip stick from gas filling the crank case. I pulled the carter bbs and double checked the float level and its just below 1/4" from center of float to the edge of the carb bowl edge. Its holding good pressure after the car is off and looking down the carb its not draining the bowl out but before we got it timed the plugs were soaking wet. can it just be that it running at 25 after TDC could have been the cause this time?

I'd change the oil again,warm up the engine,then shut it off and loosen the carb mounting bolts enough to lift up the carb.Then you might be able to tell if fuel is still running down the carb throat somehow.

If the carb really is not leaking when the engine is off the engine would have to be running super rich to dump that much fuel into the crankcase. So rich in fact that it would barely run and have black smoke out the exhaust. I would look at the vent hole on the fuel pump and see if the fuel pump is bad. Mine dribbled from the vent hole when it went bad.

Well there are just two sources of fuel to fill crankcase, fuel pump, and carburetor. In order to fill crankcase ¼ over full, 8 ounces or so, I would suspect that the fuel pump is leaking. To dump that much fuel via carburetor I should think the idle, and or drivability would be extremely poor, with black smoke from tail pipe.

Pop out the pump, and examine it for a cracked diaphragm. One can test it by placing a finger over the low pressure side, and work the lever that rides the camshaft. If it holds suction it is good, if not, you found your leak.

I returned two of the little drippers and finally put a small holley electric pump on it ......no problems in a year now. More than one way to get it done. Gets better gas milage also w/ a regulator set at 5.5 lbs.

With that much gas I was kind of leaning towards fuel pump also but I find it odd that the fuel does not drain out of the lines. I fig if the diapham is bad that it would slowly leak and drain the line. That is a new pump with maybe 20 miles on it but I dont remember the quality. Guess im buying a new carter if its the cause.

The pump valves keep the fuel from draining out of the fuel line and back into the diapham area.
I have seen a number of new pumps with bad diaphams, most of those "leakers" were poorly assembled.

Is carter even still a respectable brand anymore or is there a better one out there? what grade of oil should I run now that the inside of my engine is spotless?

Replaced the new(old) fuel pump with a new carter fuel pump, changed the oil and finished mounting down my HEI and once I fired it up I noticed a diffence from the start. I run a clear fram filter (I know not recomended) and I noticed that with this pump the fuel level in the filter is no higher than the fuel lines where the other was filling the filter all the way.

If the fuel in the filter reaches the level of the outlet then the filter will not fill up. There is no way to get the air bubble out unless the outlet is at the top. A partially full fuel filter is not a good indicator of anything so long as liquid fuel comes in and goes out.
