Hello its been a while sense I have posted cause well I have had little problems with my slant lately

Now my hyundai on the other hand......it needs some exhaust pipe work but, the info I need would apply to most makes/models/years ect.

I have a leaking section of pipe, so I need to cut it out and replace it with good. I want to expand the old pipe ends so I can slide the new into place then tack it up then remove it to weld it on the bench.

I have been looking at different tools to expand the old pipe but, most I am able to find are the sissy tools used to push out dents from those stupid clamp jobbys. These are the type of tools I have been looking at here and here . The descriptions for them aren't clear enough for me to understand.

Has any one used these types tools successfully to expand pipe the way I need to expand pipe?

Here is another pinch point I don't want to pay a whole lot for a tool I might only use one time.

Nice, but why not a slip fit with some over size tubing? It is quicker...

Wouldn't you want to expand the new piece which should be stronger than the old rotted pipe? I was thinking the old pipe might break if stretched.

If there is an exhaust shop nearby I'd cut out the bad piece and have the shop make a new piece to fit and expand the ends for you.

Well its flex connector so there's not much solid tube to expand.

I could use two slip couplings but, the old pipe is most likely a metric size so it would have to be re sized to fit the standard coupling and connector.

The only expander that I've seen actually expand (or contract) is a cast iron cone that I have.

Slip it in or over the pipe and smack with a BFH.


I usually make a slip connector by cutting a ring of the next larger pipe size and weld it on.

If you're welding and the slip fit is for alignment purposes, you can cut a ring off the current pipe size; cut a slit, and slip it over one of the pipes. Welding seals any holes.

Flex will burn out and leak very quickly. My recommendation would be not to use it.
Get a replacement piece made, or buy an appropriate coupler to weld into place.

Unfortunately I have to use a flex connection because my hyundai has a transverse engine so as the engine revs and I shift, the engine roles front to back just a bit so if there were no flex to it then it would fatigue and break some where.

For years I've used my Craftsman exhaust pipe tool for expanding exhaust pipes a little via a big screw pulling 2 cones together and forcing a number of wedges outward. It works very well at making them round again and increasing the radius by ~0.01"(?), but I've never tried to get it to stretch the metal to increase the radius by ~0.1". Maybe you could stretch the steel that much, but it would take a lot of force.

I dont think that the tools Iv been looking at could handle that much stress.

The old pipes needs to be streched about .075" to fit inside the new connector.

Its looking like i may just have to take the pips to a exhaust shop for fitting.
