Hey guys so Next month i should have some money to upgrade my slant.
I was going to do the hei conversion, throw on an electric fan and was also thinking of doing a mild cam and maybe super six conversion. I figure ill have about a $1500 budget.

What is your guys' take on this set up?

Should i not do a cam?

Are there simpler things i could do to free up a few ponies? i have a new cat and im also thinking of doing a dual exhaust from the cat back. (nothing fancy, a few cherry bombs and come out in front of the right rear wheel.)

How's the compression? Even and high in all cylinders?

Things to do before changing the cam and assuming no other mechanical faults:

Optimize the timing advance curve.
Make sure the carburetor is spot-on.
2 1/4" or 2 1/2" exhaust with a high flow cat and muffler. Duals after the cat are a waste of money and add weight.
Mill the head for higher compression.
Increase intake flow with a Super Six manifold and 2bbl carburetor.
Install oversize valves and port the head.

That Comp Cam is not much of an improvement over stock. It's also a lot of money. You can do better by having Oregon Cam Grinding grind you a cam that's better suited toward your engine. It's $70 if you supply a good core.

wow thanks josh! Im not sure what the comp is. i dont have a gauge. that is something ive been meaning to get. My high idle screw fell out but after it warms up it runs good. had to bump up the curb idle up. but before that i had the carb as good as i could get it. was runnin great. I like the tune of $70 a heck of a lot better than $300. What would be a good core cam?

Oh also it has lean burn on it right now. That is why I want to upgrade to hei. If that makes a difference in anything. And where would I get the oversized valves and how big?

Answers to HEI and oversize valves are here on the board. I don't have the time at the moment to do the searching.

You can return your cam to get your core charge back so long as they have a core on the shelf at Oregon. Also, $70 is cam only. You still need lifters, timing set and maybe valve springs. Also, if you mill the head for compression you'll have to budget for new pushrods just in case.

Just go to the top of the page in the FAQ sticky and look up HEI. Also engine matrix is a good place to look. Over size valves are 1.70 / 1.44 (engine builder) for most folks.

The 252 comp cam is almost a clone of the early solid lifter cams.You can get the factory cam specs off of Napa"s parts site of Elgine Industries-both give the specs on the cams for factory-you will see the 252 comp is pratically factory.

I like those erson cams I got an extra erson 270 if your interested ran awesome till i put a bigger cam in the old motor.
Cut the deck or head more compression is the best bang for your buck.
