Have had zero time for the slant the last 2 years...new job..new g friend...dog died so I've been traveling..yadda yadda yadda. Looks like I'll get some time this spring/summer to play with the slant.

My story:
stock 170
Holley 1920
Auto
No timing tab/site hole
Mopar orange box with dizzy....uh oh

So I had major hesitation and you good folks here suggested the dizzy curve was too radical for my stock motor. All in too soon. I should have had major pre-ignition...yes?

Anyway, took DI's recipe and changed the springs on the mechanical.

Had a local shop analyze it and here's what I got

Mech adv kicks in @ 1800
5* @ 2200
10*@ 2600
15*@ 3200
24*@ 3400

Vac adv 10* @ 11"
18* @ 14"

I found TDC and marked the balancer and chain cover. My mark is hitting about 3/4" before the TDC mark.give or take.. I've got it advanced as far as it will go although I haven't checked the additional adjustment under the dizzy.
Still have slight hesitation but not too bad.

Any input on the curve/other would be greatly appreciated

The maddening part of this whole thing is once your timing is closer to what it should be...you have to go and check the carb again...

I would warrant a guess that you could use a smidge more initial to get the mechanical + static in closer to the 30 degree mark....but at this point you might look and see if you can get your accelerator pump shot to come in a bit sooner now...(which means looking at which hole the linkage on the carb is set in, and if it needs a bit of some handy work with the pliers...)

Have you checked your plugs to see what color the deposits are when you get that "hesitation"?

Almost there!

Thanks DI. As always , your input has been invaluable.

I got the pump shot as early as the 2 hole linkage will allow..but like you say, if all else fails then pliars may be in order. Will drive it a bit more and then see what the plugs tell me.

Question: With the two available adjustments (block bolt and underside bracket) on the slant dizzy, is it enough to make up for 1 drive gear tooth?

Thanks again

Well I learned today that the two dist. adjustments aren't enough to compensate for 1 gear tooth off.

After advancing as far as I could (both adjustments) and without ping, I still had a little hesitation. So I bumped the dizzy up 1 tooth and retarded both adjustments. No go. Way too much advance.

At this point, it runs pretty well with almost max advance on the two adjustments. Seems strange that it should need that much so I am coming to the conclusion that it is the 1920. Guess I should just give it up and put the Stromberg 2 barrel on. I was hoping to get it tweaked just right.. before the change.... but I'm not feeling like messing with the 1920 only to yank it off later and put it in a box

I have a balancer and 2 chain covers that have timing tabs. The 2 covers are different so I can conclude that there are at least 2 different balancers/chain covers.

Have they used more than 2 different balancers/chain covers over the years?

Thanks in advance

Yes My '63 has the timing tab on the drivers side and my Fords 225 has the tab at the top.

I went after it today with a vacumn gauge and tach.
I've read several takes on how to use this method and here is what I went with:

1400 Rpm's with vac pod attached.
Advanced timing for slight vac increase and then dialed back the Rpm's to 1400.
Kept doing this until I hit max vac which was just a tad over 19".

I then backed it off to about 18", dropped the idle down and then reset the idle mixture.
Still have slight hesitation in the lower Rpm's.
Straightened out the acc. pump linkage a bit to get it in earlier but no noticable change.
I may have a little more room for an earlier shot.

My underside dizzy adjustment is at max advance and the block adjustment is about dead center.
Based on the TDC mark I made on the cover/dampener and comparing that to a timing tab that I have, I'm guessing I am somwhere around 20 BTDC.

No ping on the flatlands...I'll go find a hill this weekend and see what she does.[/u]
