G'day,

I am trying to start my recently built up slant 6 but I cannot get it to idle.

My problem is that when the engine is started the RPM runs away uncontrolably to about 5,000 RPM until car cuts out. It just won't idle.

I am running the following set-up:-

Edelbrock 500cfm 4bbl
Aussiespeed Hurricane Manifold
Hooker Headers
Erson E470621 cam
Oversized Stainless Valves

I have checked the throttle return spring and made sure there are no vacuum leaks.

Has anyone else had this problem before? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Happened to me but the cable was caught, also you don't need a longer cable (i'm in aus land so it's big distance with new long runner).

I'd check all parts of the cable make sure nothing is stretched hooked on etc and then I'd get the carb manual and double check everything,

Unfortunately it's not the accelerator cable as I have taken it off and still have the problem.

It is almost like the vacuum from the motor is casing the carb to open?!? I have rebuilt the carb a few times and I can't find anything wrong with it.

I am at a total loss on this.

How do you know there are no vacuum leaks? How much thicker is the exhaust flange than the intake flange?

Unless it is way overfueling, a vacuum leak should cause it to crap out until you hit the throttle. With the throttle plates shut, the only way it can pull fuel is the idle circuit.

Are the floats set correctly? If its dumping fuel and you have a vacuum leak, it can do just what you describe.

We had the exact same problem on my brother's Barracuda when we installed an Edelbrock carb. Turns out there was an open port on the rear of the base of the carb that we had completely overlooked.

We bought a threaded brass plug, screwed it in, and solved the problem.

That rear plug hole was a large vacuum leak, that was there for a vacuum port for using powerbrakes.
