I have the old trunion style transmission in my Dart. I also have a slant 904 in a storage building that I've not looked at in a while. I am wondering if I could remove the tail from the newer 904 and put it on my current transmission and get a new drive shaft made so I can use conventional style universal joints.
I might as well totally expose my ignorance by asking is it possible the newer style 904 has a different internal gearing for the final drive than my 65. I figure both are 1:1 but my Dart revs high and it has an 8 1/4 with low 300 ratio (323?) gearing. It isn't slipping but just revs at 3000+ when going 55 mph.

Not only doesn't it work, all A904 transmissions have the same 1:1 high gear ratio.

3:23's= 3000@ 70mph or somewhere near that. Depending on tire height.

Maybe I need to bring a tach on my next trip. I've converted the car to 15" wheels which should slow the engine down even more????
Thanks-Howard

I could put this transmission in this Dart but I am about to put a console in it from a cable shift car. Is there a conversion kit to go from cable to linkage?
Thanks
Howard

Use the '66 stuff to make it rod shifted.

65 tranny is a 1 year only that was cable shifted. No trunion, and can be push started!

65 tranny DOES have a trunion. It is one year only, because of a different valve body. A 64 older push button trans can be converted to a 65 trans, by changing the valve body (using a 65 VB), to work with the non push button cable shifter.

66 trans uses "mechanical" shift linkage, has no trunion, and cannot be push started. It has a different speedo connection.

67 trans is the same as 66,

68 trans had a major change, due to using a larger input shaft, and a larger pilot "nub" on the converter. Because of this change the 68 and later trans/converter cannot be used with a 67 and older engine.

Edit: corrected info about speedo connection.

There is a conversion kit, but it is for the pushbutton cable shifter to later mechanical shifted trans. Very expensive. I see they now have a kit for the non push button shifters, that is not too pricey.

My trans guy converts trunnion tails to slip yoke all the time. You have to change a lot of stuff though, it's not a simple thing.

In my opinion, that is not cost effictive. Yes it can be done, but that doesn't mean it should be done. Easier/cheaper to either change the complete trans to a newer one, or do the driveshaft conversion.

Some guys just want to retain the PB/cable shift.

I don't think he charges a whole lot more than just s standard rebuild price either.

Hell Charlie, not everyone is like us Slant racers. Some people actually have too much money.

Solution: convert the driveshaft.
