so we r having issues with power, so we have a good alt but the car doesnt hold charge, wen battery is unplugged car turns off, also i have no running lights for the tailights, brake lights turn on but not running lights, any thoughts? fuses r all good

First don’t run engine with battery disconnected it will damage voltage regulator & possibly other devices.

If battery won’t hold a charge, there are possible reasons based on what you listed:

One, high impedance or resistance short somewhere which can be located by systematically checking for electron flow in each circuit at battery. In other words, if everything is turned off & one battery cable is disconnected, and there is still a small current flowing between battery terminal and battery cable when tested.

Second, battery has a bad cell. This can be due to old age, improperly maintained charge while in storage, or over charging which will boil off electrolyte. Have it tested.

By running lights, do you mean just tail lights when parking only lights are on, or tail, parking and side marker lights when headlights are burning? Check here for wiring [url=http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=27]diagrams[/url].

Check black 18 gage wire from headlight switch that runs to the rear of car via behind driver side kick panel along doorsill & splits off for each tail light & plate light in trunk area. Also this tail & marker light circuit runs through the directional turn signal switch (a point of many lighting problems) located in steering wheel. See diagram “Aâ€￾: 8 way connector upper left pin # 4 & 3… This connector is located behind driver’s kick panel.

One easy test for sloppy turn signal switch is to gently pull turn signal lever in direction of steering wheel while head lights are on & blinkers off. If tail lights illuminate while pulling on lever, switch is worn out and needs to be replaced. Save your self a lot of trouble and purchase a new, not a used junk-yard switch if needed.

If you don’t already have a VOM, and test light, now would be a good time to pick up these diagnostic tools.
