I just replaced the carb on my '65 Valiant with a pre-63 Carter that has no hookup for a PCV valve. I thought the nipple on the carb went straight to full manifold vacuum, so I drilled out the center of a 3/8 automotive stud and screwed it into the intake where the hold down bolt for the carb is, put a nut on it to hold the carb down and slipped the pcv hose over it (with a hose clamp of course. It does give full manifold vacuum and doesn't leak at all but the it doesn't run like it should unless i plug the hose. So I'm wondering...is that too strong of vacuum for the PCV valve? Can my old Carter not handle the changes in vacuum caused by the addition of a PCV valve? Did I pick a bad place to get my vacuum from, even if its inches from where a later model Carter would've gotten it from? It runs and drives fairly well but misses alot when cold and just runs a hell of alot better with the hose plugged. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks.

That carburetor isn't calibrated for use with PCV. You've introduced a vacuum leak. I have converted BBSs not originally equipped for PCV with mixed success; sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. When I do this, I replicate the factory setup: drill a ¼" passage upward from the base and a 5/16" passage inward to intersect from the blank PCV boss, then install a 5/16" steel hose nipple. You may still have to figure out how to recalibrate the carb (tiny drills and very steady hands), if idle mixture adjustments fail to compensate. Also make sure the PCV valve is correct and working.
